PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Dan Baker (ranked 4603 p4p, 5781 weight class) and John Ping (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Dan Baker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, John Ping!
The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Sandra Marshall and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Baker gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Ping tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Baker smiles and moves away.

Baker really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Baker is adopting a defensive guard.
Ping wants to control from the top but Baker keeps moving.
Ping must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Baker is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Ping presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Baker jumps guard and drags Ping to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Baker keeping moving, preventing Ping from controlling successfully.
Ping really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Baker. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Ping postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Baker looking for a guillotine here but Ping defends easily.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Ping's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Baker is pulling down on Ping's head to control his posture.
Ping slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Ping throws a big elbow that misses.
Baker trying to control the position here.
Baker is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Ping regains full guard. Nicely done.

Ping is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Baker is aware though and is defending well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Baker is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Ping can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Baker controls the pace.
Ping looking to control.

Ping is working an open guard so Baker takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Baker tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Ping defends well and Baker ends up having to push Ping into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Baker breaks from the clinch.
Ping pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Dan Baker seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ping throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Baker's waist but Baker gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ping off to one side.

Baker moves into the clinch.

Baker pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A head kick from Baker lands but Ping takes it in his stride.

Baker forces Ping back against the cage and clinches.
Baker tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Ping just stands there and leans against the cage.
Baker lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!

Ping has Baker pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Ping pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Baker tumbling to the mat - Ping dives into Baker's guard.

Baker pushes Ping off and gets back to his feet.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Ping avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Ping throws a big counter head kick but Baker avoids it with no problem.

Baker is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Ping is defending well for now.
Baker drops down looking for an ankle pick but Ping pulls his leg out and moves away.

Baker tries to close the distance and clinch up but Ping swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Baker throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Ping.
Ping throws a nice outside leg kick.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ping.
Baker shoots in but no luck this time.
Baker shoots for a takedown but Ping saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Baker stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Baker wants it to stay on the feet.
Baker half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Ping is trying to break the clinch but Baker is controlling him.
Ping is trying to push Baker away but Baker has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Baker gets control of Ping's arms and successfully pulls guard. Baker will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Ping is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Baker is pulling down on Ping's head to control his posture.

Ping throws a front kick that sends Baker stumbling back into the cage.
Ping tries to clinch there but Baker circles away.
Baker throws a big counter combination but Ping scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Ping fails with an attempt to clinch.

Baker closes the distance and clinches.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ping is pressed up against the cage. Baker has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Ping down to the mat. Ping avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Ping doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Baker counters with a three punch combo that has Ping backing up. Ping nods at Baker to acknowledge the strikes.

and Ping counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Ping.
Baker avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Baker is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Ping can do to turn this around?

Dan Baker overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Baker tries to pass the half guard into mount. Ping knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Still in half guard, Baker seems content to control.

Baker looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Baker wants to advance to full mount but Ping doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Baker avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Baker is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
John Ping has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Dan Baker is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

I would just about give that final round to John Ping.
