PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jan Zajac (ranked 3259 p4p, 4010 weight class) and Shaun Irwin (ranked 425 p4p, 497 weight class). Irwin has chosen No More Heroes as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Shaun Irwin will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jan Zajac!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Shaun Irwin!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Phil Schofield and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Irwin fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Zajac swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

Irwin gets a clinch.
Zajac fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Zajac tries to pull guard but Irwin won't allow it.
Irwin is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Zajac jumps guard but Irwin turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jan Zajac. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Irwin has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Zajac is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Irwin pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Irwin dives in and grabs Zajac's left leg, looking for a takedown. Zajac pushes down on Irwin's head and hops out.
A quick step to the side and Zajac tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.

Zajac gets full guard.
Zajac trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Zajac throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Zajac throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Zajac might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Irwin slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
A lull in the action here as Irwin stalls from top position.

It looks like Irwin might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Irwin is continuing to stall.
Zajac is trying to control Irwin's posture but Irwin avoids it.
Irwin wants to control but Zajac is keeping him busy.
Irwin wants to control for a moment but Zajac uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.
Zajac flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Zajac won't allow Irwin to pass to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Irwin is looking to take a break and control but Zajac is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Zajac tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Irwin is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Zajac is just riding it out for now. Irwin eventually gives up the hold.
Irwin seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Zajac does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Irwin shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Zajac defends it nicely.
Zajac changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Irwin throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Zajac's waist but Zajac gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Irwin off to one side.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Irwin dives in for a single leg takedown but Zajac sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Zajac feinted with a counter takedown.

and Zajac counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Zajac.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Shaun Irwin will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!

Irwin shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Zajac as he avoids it easily.
Zajac tries to counter with a takedown but Irwin is quick to defend against it.
Irwin dives in and grabs Zajac's left leg, looking for a takedown. Zajac pushes down on Irwin's head and hops out.

Irwin decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Zajac is looking for a sweep. Irwin is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Irwin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Zajac is looking to control Irwin's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Zajac avoid being mounted?

Zajac moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Irwin controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Zajac is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Zajac is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Zajac is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Irwin frees his head nicely. Oh but Zajac has switched to an armbar! Irwin is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!

A victorious Jan Zajac thanked his army of followers in his post fight interview, telling people to make sure they follow him on Twitter.
Shaun Irwin was interviewed post fight and said 'I would say that he is the better fighter, but I would be lying.'.
