PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jeppe Bjoergen (ranked 6411 p4p, 3463 weight class) and Kevin Shinnie (ranked 600 p4p, 418 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jeppe Bjoergen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 32 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kevin Shinnie!
The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Hugh Johnson and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bjoergen takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Shinnie avoids the head kick by Bjoergen.
Shinnie swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Bjoergen tries to clinch up
and Shinnie counters with a straight right hand.
Bjoergen shoots in looking for a takedown. Shinnie tries to sprawl out of it but Bjoergen keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Shinnie manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Bjoergen takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Jeppe Bjoergen's cut is getting worse.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bjoergen uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Shinnie.

Shinnie clobbers Bjoergen with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Bjoergen closes the distance and clinches up with Shinnie, looking for a takedown. Bjoergen pushes Shinnie against the cage but Shinnie circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

and Shinnie counters with a nice body shot.
Bjoergen throws a right and a left that Shinnie avoids nicely.
Shinnie throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Bjoergen shoots in and drives through. Shinnie sprawls well.

enabling Shinnie to counter with a crisp jab.

Shinnie misses with a kick to the body.
Kevin Shinnie seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shinnie looks to score with a jab to the body but Bjoergen is just out of range.
Bjoergen throws a quick counter kick to the body but Shinnie avoids it.
Shinnie is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Bjoergen had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into mush.
Bjoergen tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Shinnie paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Bjoergen throws a sloppy head kick and Shinnie moves out of range easily.
Bjoergen wants to clinch up but Shinnie keeps it at a distance.

A nice side step and Shinnie releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Shinnie scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Shinnie throws a big shot that misses.

Bjoergen closes the distance and clinches.
Bjoergen keeps control of Shinnie as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Bjoergen has Shinnie pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Shinnie manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Bjoergen wants to clinch up but Shinnie keeps it at a distance.
Bjoergen slips a jab and a cross from Shinnie.
Bjoergen throws a leg kick which misses Shinnie's front leg but catches the back leg as Shinnie tries to avoid it.

and Bjoergen counters with a nice double leg into side control. Shinnie won't be happy with that.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Shinnie pushes Bjoergen away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Bjoergen gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
We've been hearing good reports from Bjoergen's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Shinnie sneaks out the side door and pushes Bjoergen away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

The fight stays on the outside here - Bjoergen looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
