PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Hong Kong (ranked 140 p4p, 223 weight class) and Dwight Schrute (ranked 22 p4p, 34 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hong Kong!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Dwight Schrute!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Yukihiro Shimada and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schrute throws a lazy right hand but Kong sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Kong drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Schrute manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
Kong is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Schrute is defending well.
Schrute fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Schrute blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Kong blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Schrute.
Kong tries to score a body lock takedown but Schrute shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Kong lands on the inside with an uppercut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Schrute gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Kong.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hong Kong. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Schrute creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Kong's defenses.
A head punch on the inside from Kong fails to land.
Schrute has Kong pressed against the cage.
Schrute lands a nice uppercut.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Schrute tries to work over Kong's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Schrute is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Schrute prevents a takedown attempt there.
Kong lands with a left to the head.
Schrute misses with a body punch.
A short right from Kong on the inside.

Kong has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Schrute regains guard immediately.
Kong wants to control from the top but Schrute keeps moving.
Kong throws an elbow that misses. Schrute uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Kong's guard. Nice move by Schrute!

Kong wants to control the position but Schrute says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Schrute is controlling the pace.
Kong is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Kong is working hard here to advance position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kong manages to get to full guard.

Kong working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Schrute doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Schrute manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Kong utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Schrute controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Kong seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Kong had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Schrute defends it easily.
Schrute stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kong swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kong working a defensive guard here.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kong pulls Schrute in close to prevent any damage.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Dwight Schrute dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Schrute throws a jab when Kong was well out of range.
Kong attempts a counter takedown but Schrute avoids it well and moves away.

Kong shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Schrute manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Kong advances to half guard.
Kong wants to free his trapped foot but Schrute is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Kong lands strikes from half guard.

Schrute makes his way to full guard, as Kong worked for a kimura.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kong throws a strike but Schrute rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Schrute wants to control from the top but Kong keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kong is looking to sweep but instead, Schrute has passed into half guard.
Still in half guard, Schrute seems content to control.

Kong looking for submissions off his back.
Kong moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Schrute trying to control but Kong is working from the bottom.

Kong is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Schrute is aware though and is defending well.

Schrute content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Kong has locked up a guillotine! Kong's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Schrute is holding on here and Kong must be using up a lot of energy. Schrute has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Kong gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:53 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Hong Kong!
Hong Kong retains his welterweight title!
After the fight, Hong Kong was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
