PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Raul Gonzalez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Stephen Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Raul Gonzalez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Stephen Davis!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Cecil Peabody and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Davis will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Gonzalez needs to keep his hands up - Davis had a free shot at his head there.
Davis fails to land with a series of punches.
Davis misses with a series of wild punches.
Davis fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Davis throws a right and a left that Gonzalez avoids nicely.

Davis drives through and clinches with Gonzalez against the cage.
Gonzalez tries to score a body lock takedown but Davis shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Gonzalez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Davis throws a one two combo.
Davis misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Davis looks to land a combination but Gonzalez avoids it well.

Gonzalez shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Davis's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Gonzalez prevents Davis from getting back to his feet.
Gonzalez's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Davis is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Gonzalez is controlling him.
Gonzalez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Davis wants to sweep but no luck.
Davis looks gassed!
Gonzalez not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Raul Gonzalez just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Gonzalez clinches up with Davis and pushes him back against the cage.
Gonzalez changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Davis fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Gonzalez gets the takedown into side control.

Gonzalez decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Gonzalez bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Gonzalez decides to stand up, so the ref orders Davis to his feet.

Gonzalez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Davis is trying to defend but Gonzalez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Gonzalez has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Davis connects with a nice looking jab.

Gonzalez scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Davis is trying to get back to half guard.
Davis is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Gonzalez has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Gonzalez takes a little break here. Davis wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Davis tries to buck Gonzalez off but Gonzalez is having none of it.
Davis is breathing heavily.

Gonzalez has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Gonzalez shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Gonzalez takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Gonzalez has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Davis is trying desperately to improve position.

Davis wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Gonzalez content just to control the position here.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Raul Gonzalez just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Gonzalez darts in and clinches Davis up against the cage.
Gonzalez is trying to drag Davis to the mat but Davis just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Gonzalez has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Davis is trying to keep an underhook but Gonzalez manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Gonzalez moves into full mount! Davis won't be happy about that!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Raul Gonzalez dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Gonzalez throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Davis's waist but Davis gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gonzalez off to one side.

and Davis counters with a one-two to the body.

Gonzalez feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Davis is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Gonzalez forces his way into half guard.
Davis takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Gonzalez in particular looking to stall.
Gonzalez's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Davis is trying to get back to full guard.
Gonzalez uses his free foot to push down on Davis's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Davis.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Davis tries to lock up and control but Gonzalez gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Davis is wriggling around trying to escape.
Gonzalez tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Raul Gonzalez is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Davis is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Gonzalez takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Gonzalez drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Gonzalez content to stall in guard here.
Stephen Davis has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Davis is looking to stand back up but Gonzalez counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Davis.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gonzalez, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
