Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jans Schmidt (ranked 1173 p4p, 2641 weight class) and Kris Shumway (ranked 128 p4p, 262 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jans Schmidt!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kris Shumway!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, George Francis and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shumway scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Schmidt doesn't seem bothered though.
Kris Shumway seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shumway throws a hook to the side of Schmidt's head but Schmidt sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Shumway stuns Schmidt with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Shumway lands a jab to the head.
Shumway takes a swing at Schmidt's ribcage but misses.
A momentary lapse in concentration from Shumway enables Schmidt to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Shumway manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Shumway really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Schmidt. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Schmidt is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Schmidt working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Shumway's head.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Shumway controls Schmidt momentarily but Schmidt frees himself.
Schmidt landing with the ground and pound.
Schmidt is in close to Shumway's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Shumway is rocked!
Schmidt postures up from his opponent's guard, before exploding into some vicious ground and pound! Shumway covers up, he's hurt! Schmidt keeps throwing the strikes, glancing at the referee... Will he stop it?? One more big shot from Schmidt and the ref steps in to end the fight! Schmidt can't hide his delight as he celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jans Schmidt!
Jans Schmidt retains his featherweight title!
After the fight, Jans Schmidt was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
