PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Owen McNamara (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lyoto Shade (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shade has chosen Open Hapiness as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the ring.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Owen McNamara!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Lyoto Shade!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, William Gold and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shade scores a takedown into full mount!
Shade avoids the attempt from McNamara to control.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Shade is standing up, even though he is in mount.

Shade forces McNamara back against the ropes and clinches.

Shade jumps guard.
McNamara looking to pass the guard.
Shade wants to stand up but McNamara is controlling him.

Shade looking for a guillotine here but McNamara defends easily.

Shade isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. McNamara stacks Shade on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by McNamara!

McNamara passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Shade!
McNamara wants to control the pace but Shade is squirming around nicely.
Shade really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
McNamara sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Shade tries to hold on but McNamara pushes him away.
McNamara tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Shade bucks McNamara off and manages to get back to his feet!

McNamara closes the distance but Shade moves to the side
and Shade counters with a nice leg kick.
Shade throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
McNamara wants to clinch but Shade slips to the side

and Shade counters with a takedown into side control.
McNamara sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
McNamara punching from the bottom.
McNamara regains full guard. Nicely done.
Shade looking to pass the guard.
McNamara bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shade's guard.

McNamara is stalling in the full guard.

McNamara advances to half guard.
McNamara looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Shade is staying active underneath McNamara, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
McNamara works his way into side control.
Shade on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Shade really doesn't want to stay on the ground with McNamara. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
McNamara is looking to take a break and control but Shade is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
McNamara advances to mount.

Shade defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from McNamara.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Owen McNamara will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


McNamara closes the distance looking to clinch

and Shade counters by moving into the clinch.
McNamara has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Shade avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
McNamara misses with the head strike.
McNamara is trying to break free.

McNamara's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

McNamara tries to keep at a distance but Shade has taken the fight into the clinch.
Shade tries to pull guard but McNamara won't allow it.
Shade misses with the head strike.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shade keeps control of McNamara as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
McNamara goes for a takedown in the clinch but Shade prevents it.
Shade tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Shade is breathing heavily.
McNamara tries for a takedown. No joy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Owen McNamara. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Shade tries to pull guard but McNamara won't allow it.

McNamara gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Shade regains guard.

Shade wriggles free and stands up.

Shade fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with McNamara, pushing him back against the ropes.
McNamara tries to break the clinch but Shade is controlling the position.
Shade jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as McNamara walks away with a smile on his face. Shade gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
McNamara throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Shade tries to clinch but McNamara is having none of it.
Owen McNamara is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Shade moves out of range of the leg kick from McNamara.
Shade tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and McNamara counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
McNamara thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Shade's head.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McNamara lands with a punch from half guard.
Shade is looking to improve his position.

McNamara stands up and beckons Shade to join him on the feet.
This has been an exciting period of action!

McNamara rushes Shade and presses him up against the ropes.

Shade escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

McNamara clinches.
Nice elbow from McNamara.

McNamara successfully pulls guard.

McNamara looking for a guillotine here but Shade defends easily.
Shade wants to control from the top but McNamara keeps moving.

McNamara is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
McNamara pulls Shade in to control the position.
McNamara is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

McNamara is trying to keep Shade in close.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Shade throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McNamara works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
McNamara punching from the bottom - just letting Shade know he's still in a fight.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
McNamara tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
McNamara wants to clinch.

McNamara darts in and clinches Shade up against the ropes.
The fighters are pressed against the ropes, as the pace of the fight slows.
McNamara prevents a takedown attempt there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Owen McNamara dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


The fight stays on the outside here - McNamara looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Shade changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. McNamara tries to avoid it but Shade manages to keep hold of a leg and drag McNamara to the ground. McNamara escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
McNamara takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Shade should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
McNamara fails with the takedown.
Shade has his takedown stuffed
and McNamara counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Shade is lucky that one didn't land flush.
No luck for Shade with that takedown attempt.
Owen McNamara has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Lyoto Shade.

McNamara shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

McNamara is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Shade is trying to maintain the position but McNamara is very close to passing his half guard.
Owen McNamara overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
McNamara is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
McNamara takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
McNamara moves to back control.

McNamara has got one arm under Shade's chin. This could be trouble... Shade trying to control the other hand but McNamara gets it free and sqeezes tight - just a matter of time now! Yep, Shade has tapped out! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:03 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Owen McNamara!
