PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Romeo Del Gaiso (ranked 2934 p4p, 4346 weight class) and Hiroshi Papo (ranked 169 p4p, 231 weight class). Del Gaiso comes to the cage accompanied by Deorro, Elvis Crespo & Henry Fong - Pica. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Romeo Del Gaiso!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Hiroshi Papo!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Frank Dennis and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Papo drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Del Gaiso wants to get back to his feet.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Papo throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Del Gaiso works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Papo lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Del Gaiso looks like he's trying to stand up.

Papo is controlling the pace.
My spies in Advanced Fitness Inc. inform me that Papo has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
It looks like Papo might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Papo is continuing to stall.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Papo seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Papo looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Del Gaiso wants to stand back up but Papo manages to pass into side control.
Del Gaiso is trying to improve his position.
Del Gaiso really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Papo's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Del Gaiso is looking to regain half guard here but Papo keeps moving and retains side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Papo is putting a hurting on Del Gaiso here, landing some big shots from side control.
A lull in the action here as Papo stalls from top position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Del Gaiso manages to get back to half guard.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Papo shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Del Gaiso's guard.
Del Gaiso is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Del Gaiso has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Papo has passed into side control.

Papo has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Del Gaiso is working to get back to half guard.
Papo takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Let's hope that Papo has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Del Gaiso is wriggling around trying to escape.
Del Gaiso is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Papo cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Papo takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Hiroshi Papo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Del Gaiso tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Papo paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Papo looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Del Gaiso enables Papo to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Del Gaiso manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Papo seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Papo pushes down on Del Gaiso's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Well, if Papo is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Papo shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
An attempted straight right counter from Del Gaiso misses the target.
Romeo Del Gaiso has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hiroshi Papo.
Del Gaiso wants to clinch.
Del Gaiso scores with a sloppy right hand. Papo should have avoided that one.
Papo darts in looking for a takedown but Del Gaiso gets double underhooks and turns Papo into the cage.

Romeo Del Gaiso has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Papo is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Del Gaiso's shoulder. That is not cool.
An elbow from Papo crashes against the mat.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Del Gaiso pushes Papo away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Papo gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Hiroshi Papo comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Papo winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
