PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gustav Steyn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and D S (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Gustav Steyn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, D S!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, James Ackerman and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Steyn darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Steyn missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

S is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Steyn pulls his head out easily.
Steyn looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks S with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Steyn stops S from getting back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Steyn working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Steyn is thwarting S's attempts to control the position.
S tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Steyn manages to move to mount!
BOOM! Steyn connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Steyn breaks from S's wrist control and lands an elbow.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Steyn working S over with strikes here.
S tries to reverse the position but Steyn maintains control.
S is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Steyn landing shots from mount.
Steyn connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Steyn fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Steyn scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish S?
S is squirming around, avoiding Steyn's attempts to control the action.
S really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

S defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Steyn.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
S bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
S looks gassed!
S looking to pass the guard.
Steyn looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Steyn could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Steyn has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but S can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Steyn looking to hit a scissor sweep but S is one step ahead there.

S wants to control from the top but Steyn keeps moving.
Steyn throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
S looking to pass the guard.
S stopping the sweep attempt from Steyn.

Steyn working for a triangle but S defends it easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
S has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Steyn is proving hard to escape from.
S trying to control but Steyn is working from the bottom.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Steyn feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Steyn moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
S looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
S with a lazy takedown attempt

and Steyn counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in S's guard now.
S can't keep his opponent in guard - Steyn advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Gustav Steyn overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Steyn trying to control the action but S is working from the bottom.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Steyn connects with a nice short shot to S's temple.
S is trying to control but can't.

Steyn is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, S has managed to free his arm - good work.
S trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Steyn manages to pass to mount!
Steyn scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish S?
Steyn lands a heavy elbow.
S tries to get back to half guard but can't.
S is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
S is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
A nice elbow there by Steyn.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
S is bucking up trying to escape but Steyn cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
S throwing hammer fists to the chest of Steyn. What's that going to do exactly?

Steyn looking for a guillotine from mount but S is having none of it.
S tries to hold on but Steyn pushes him away.
S is trying to escape the mount.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Steyn here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Steyn with a couple of short strikes.

Steyn looking to secure an arm triangle but S defends it well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
S tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Steyn looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
S is squirming around, avoiding Steyn's attempts to control the action.
S avoids a series of strikes thrown by Steyn.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
S gets back to half guard.
Ground and pound from Steyn.
Steyn looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
S has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Steyn is working away from the top position though.
Steyn wants to lay and pray for a moment but S keeps working.
S tries to roll over but Steyn keeps him under control.
Steyn stalling.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Steyn avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

S tries to clinch up

and Steyn counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Steyn with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
S has hold of Steyn's hands but Steyn slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Steyn tries to pass the half guard into mount. S knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
S moves into full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
S is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Steyn drops back, looking for a kneebar! S looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. S looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from S!
S prevents Steyn from escaping the position.
Steyn parries the strikes from S easily there. S is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Steyn to escape.
S with the ground and pound but Steyn regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
S wants to stand up but Steyn is controlling the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
S is trying to control. Steyn wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Steyn is pressing down on S's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Steyn is looking for a triangle but S pushes his legs off easily.
S tries to stand but Steyn is controlling from the bottom.

Steyn working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. S doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. S manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Steyn is striking off his back. S thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.

Steyn trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but S manages to pass to mount!
Steyn is trying desperately to improve position.
Steyn looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
S keeps control of the position as Steyn tries to break free.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Steyn is working hard here to advance position.
Will S go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
S is striking well from the back but Steyn escapes and manages to control the positon and works his way to half guard. A much better position - the crisis is over for the time being.
S wants to stand but Steyn has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
S blocks the strikes from Steyn.
D S has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Gustav Steyn is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
S swings for the body but Steyn moves out of range.

And that's the end of the fight!
Gustav Steyn showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Steyn, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
