Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jimbo Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charlie Day (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jimbo Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Charlie Day!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Jorge Garcia and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith misses with the combination.
A lazy left from Smith finds it's target.
Smith shoots in and drives through. Day sprawls well.
Smith moves out of range of the body kick.
Smith throws a series of punches but Day avoids them all with ease.
Smith throws a leg kick but Day sees it coming and moves out of range.
Jimbo Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith moves out of range of the body kick.
Smith stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Day.
Day keeps the fight on the outside.

Smith closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Smith lands in his opponent's guard.
Smith wants to pass the guard but Day is keeping the position.
Smith postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Day really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Day has a closed guard, preventing Smith from standing up.
Smith trying to control but Day is working from the bottom.

Day wants to sweep but no luck.
Smith postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Smith fails to land with a series of punches.
Smith fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Smith is breathing heavily.

Day closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Smith goes for a takedown attempt but Day pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jimbo Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A head kick misses from Day.
Day lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.


It looks like Jimbo Smith has been cut.

Day drives through and clinches with Smith against the cage.
Smith wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Day gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Smith regains guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Day stands up from Smith's guard - Day perhaps looking for a knockout.

Day bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Day is staying tight to Smith's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Day trying to control the action but Smith is working from the bottom.

Day stands up and beckons Smith to his feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Day closes the distance and clinches.
Smith takes an elbow to the forehead.

Day has hold of one of Smith's legs. Smith is fighting the takedown attempt but Day gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Day content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Smith keeping full guard, as Day tries to pass.
Smith trying to control the position.

Smith looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Smith avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Day decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Day's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Day duly obliges.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Day pulls guard effortlessly.
Day is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Day being controlled here, momentarily.
Day is trying to control the position but Smith postures up.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Smith thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Charlie Day dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Jimbo Smith's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Day fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Smith, pushing him back against the cage.
Day jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Smith walks away with a smile on his face. Day gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Smith throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Day counters by moving into the clinch.
Day is working for takedown but Smith is calmly controlling the position for now.
Day stops a takedown attempt from Smith.
Knees in the clinch landing for Day.
Smith takes an elbow to the temple.

Day has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Smith regains guard immediately.

Smith working for a triangle but Day defends it easily.
Smith looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Day puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smith actively working from the bottom here.
Smith wants to get back to full guard.

Day stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Day looks to land a combination but Smith avoids it well.

Day shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Day was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Smith tries to lock up and control but Day gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Smith really wants to buck Day off and get back to his feet.

Smith wants to hold on but Day pushes him away.
Day controlling his opponent.
Smith is wriggling around trying to escape.
Day tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Smith is desperately trying to improve his position but Day has a good base and remains in mount.

Smith is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Day controlling from the full mount.
Smith tries to lock up and control but Day gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Day wants to stand but Smith has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Day wanted to stand there but Smith had control of the position.

Day lets loose with a powerful body kick. Smith will feel that in the morning.

Smith has his foot on Day's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Day works his way back into a safe position though.

Day lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Smith backwards.

Day manages to break the clinch.
Day throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Day slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Day fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Smith.
Day fails in his attempt to clinch.

and Day counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Day.

Smith is pressed up against the cage. Day has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Smith down to the mat. Smith avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Day scores with a one two! Smith had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Day tries to bum rush Smith with a series of wild strikes but Smith uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Smith throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Day counters by clinching up.
Smith throws a punch but it's blocked by Day.

Smith turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Smith misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Day takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
You can see the frustration on Day's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Day sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Charlie Day is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Day is looking to improve his position.

Smith is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Charlie Day comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Day has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
