PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sao Alela (ranked 460 p4p, 317 weight class) and Dick Pawlik (ranked 54 p4p, 34 weight class). Alela comes to the cage accompanied by Ground Zero (MOP). The key to victory for Sao Alela has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Sao Alela!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Dick Pawlik!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Chad Campbell and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alela loads up on a big right hand but Pawlik slips the punch.
Alela swings for the body but Pawlik moves out of range.
Alela is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Pawlik.
Pawlik misses with a takedown attempt
and Alela counters with a stiff right hand.
Alela lands a nice hook to Pawlik's body. Pawlik takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Pawlik throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
A shot to the liver by Alela. Beautiful body shot.
The fighters circle momentarily. Alela darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Alela misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Pawlik.
Pawlik shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Alela has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Far-Q Fight Club in the buildup to the fight.
Alela misses with a wild combination.
Pawlik drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Alela defends it well.
Pawlik looks for a takedown but Alela sprawls well.
Pawlik moves out of range as Alela throws a body kick.
Pawlik tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Alela looks to land a right hand but Pawlik moved out of range.
Pawlik shoots in looking for a takedown but Alela manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Pawlik's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Sao Alela has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dick Pawlik.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Pawlik fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Alela manages to avoid it.
Pawlik scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Alela doesn't seem bothered though.

Sao Alela is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Pawlik lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Alela is staying active underneath Pawlik, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Pawlik throws an elbow that misses. Alela uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Pawlik's guard. Nice move by Alela!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Alela wants to stand but his hand is trapped. Pawlik uses the opportunity to regain full guard.

Pawlik is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Alela has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Pawlik is proving hard to escape from.

Alela got a little sloppy there for a moment and Pawlik has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Alela has managed to get both his arms back between Pawlik's legs - danger averted.

Pawlik is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Pawlik fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Alela to the ground. Pawlik is now in Alela's guard.
Alela wants to stand and escape but Pawlik is having none of it.
Pawlik wants to pass the guard but Alela is keeping the position.
Pawlik throws a big right hand that misses.
Alela utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Sao Alela will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Pawlik looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Alela is trying to control but can't.

Pawlik felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Alela is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Pawlik's shoulder. That is not cool.

Alela decides to stand back up. Alela steps back and let's Pawlik get back to his feet.

This has been an exciting period of action!

That was a close second round but I would say that Sao Alela will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Pawlik crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Alela - the referee stops the clock and Pawlik gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Alela. Pawlik manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pawlik takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Pawlik working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Dick Pawlik has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Pawlik connects with a nice short shot to Alela's temple.

Pawlik is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Alela still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Alela has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

Dick Pawlik comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Alela has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
