PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jeff Bridges (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Muay Thai (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bridges comes to the cage accompanied by Damian Marley - welcome to jamrock. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jeff Bridges!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Muay Thai!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Edson Gomes and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Bridges clinches up against the cage.
Thai with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Thai misses with an elbow over the top.
Bridges is working for takedown but Thai is calmly controlling the position for now.
Bridges goes for a takedown in the clinch but Thai prevents it.

Thai's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Bridges changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Thai tries to avoid it but Bridges manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Thai to the ground. Thai escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jeff Bridges. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Thai bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bridges struggling a bit here.
Bridges is trying to get back to half guard.
Bridges is trying to escape the position but Thai is controlling the position.

Thai stands up.
Thai with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

Thai feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Thai slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Thai stands up and waves to Bridges to follow him.
Bridges tries for a takedown but Thai circles away easily
and Thai counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
Bridges is breathing heavily.

Bridges gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Thai decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Thai feints and as Bridges raises his hands in defense, Thai changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Thai wanted to stand there but Bridges had control of the position.

Bridges had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Thai is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Bridges Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Thai's back instead.

Bridges looking for the choke but no joy.

Bridges is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Thai defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Thai manages to reverse the position and now he's in Bridges's guard. Nice work there by Thai.

Bridges wants to sweep but no luck.
Bridges is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Thai pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Bridges is keeping the position for now.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Thai lands a head kick. Bridges smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

and Thai counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Bridges manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Thai is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bridges throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.

Bridges jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Thai manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Bridges tries to advance to mount but can't.
Thai wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Bridges advances to full mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Muay Thai dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

and Thai counters with a nice kick to the body.

Jeff Bridges is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Thai listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Thai stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Bridges to get to his feet.

and Thai finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.

Thai closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Thai lands in his opponent's guard.
Thai in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Thai postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Thai wants to get up but he can't break Bridges's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Bridges escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Thai gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Thai has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Bridges is proving hard to escape from.

Bridges looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Thai's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Bridges wants to sweep but no luck.
Bridges lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Thai!
Thai sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Bridges seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Thai does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Muay Thai showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Bridges tries to close the distance and clinch but Thai swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Horrible takedown by Bridges or perhaps it was just good defense by Thai which made him look bad.
Bridges is looking to clinch.
Thai throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Thai throws a head kick that half lands.
Thai lands a head kick. Bridges smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Knees in the clinch landing for Thai.
Thai landing some nice looking knees to the body.
The referee calls for Thai to work.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Thai pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Bridges tries for a takedown but Thai sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
A head kick from Thai lands but Bridges takes it in his stride.
Thai throws a leg kick which misses Bridges's front leg but catches the back leg as Bridges tries to avoid it.

and Thai counters with a nice low kick that buckles Bridges's knee momentarily.

Bridges manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Thai manages to get himself to full guard.

and Thai counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

and Thai counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Bridges is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Thai tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

and Thai counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Bridges's guard now.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Thai gets to his feet. Bridges looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Thai tries to close the distance and clinch up but Bridges swats him away and circles back towards the center.

and Thai counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Thai stands and steps away. Bridges gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Thai tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
A head kick from Bridges lands but Thai takes it in his stride.
Jeff Bridges seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Thai counters with a flying knee. Nice.

and Thai counters with a good low kick that Bridges was not able to check.

and Thai counters with a nice body kick.
Thai throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Jeff Bridges has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Bridges throws a leg kick but Thai sees it coming and moves out of range.
Bridges takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Bridges will be looking to protect his midsection after taking some solid kicks to the body.

and Thai counters with a head kick. That will keep Bridges thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Thai cracks Bridges with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.

and Thai counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

and Thai counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

Thai drives through and clinches with Bridges against the cage.
Thai looking to slow down the pace here.
Thai with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Bridges throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Bridges is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Bridges looking to throw knees to the head but Thai is blocking nicely.

Thai pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

and Thai counters with a single leg into guard. Bridges didn't expect that.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Bridges is on top in guard.
Muay Thai is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Thai wants to stand and escape but Bridges is having none of it.

And that's the end of the fight!
Muay Thai comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Thai has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
