PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chief Zapata (ranked 3098 p4p, 3822 weight class) and Quinten MacQuibble (ranked 435 p4p, 496 weight class). MacQuibble has chosen Scots Wha Hae as his entrance music. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Quinten MacQuibble was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chief Zapata!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Quinten MacQuibble!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Yves DeLean and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

MacQuibble throws a low kick but it's checked well by Zapata.
MacQuibble throws a left and a right that both miss

and Zapata counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Zapata keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of MacQuibble's head.
MacQuibble wants to stand and escape but Zapata is having none of it.
MacQuibble can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Zapata controls the pace.
Zapata wants to pass the guard but MacQuibble is keeping the position.
Zapata prevents MacQuibble from getting back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Zapata advances to half guard.
Zapata lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Zapata postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for MacQuibble to stand up.

Zapata moves into range and clinches up with MacQuibble.

MacQuibble tries to circle away but Zapata has him pinned against the cage.
MacQuibble has had enough of the clinch but Zapata keeps him there for the moment.

MacQuibble has Zapata pressed against the cage.
Zapata has MacQuibble pressed against the cage, preventing MacQuibble from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
MacQuibble looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Zapata keeps the fight in the clinch, despite MacQuibble's efforts to push away.
MacQuibble managing to block the knees to the body from Zapata.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
MacQuibble tries to break free but Zapata pushes him back against the cage.
MacQuibble working hard to break the clinch.
MacQuibble wants to get back to striking at distance but Zapata won't allow it.
MacQuibble prevents the takedown attempt.
Zapata is trying to pull guard but MacQuibble turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

MacQuibble manages to break the clinch.
MacQuibble will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Zapata scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Zapata is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. MacQuibble knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Zapata content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
MacQuibble prevents Zapata from moving into mount.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Zapata tries for a kimura but MacQuibble is defending well.

Zapata decides to take the fight back to the feet.
MacQuibble cracks Zapata with a right hand to the side of the head.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Zapata misses with an attempted mid kick.
Zapata tries to land a leg kick but MacQuibble saw it coming and moves away.
Zapata throws a combination but it was largely blocked by MacQuibble.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chief Zapata dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Some bone on bone action there as Zapata checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Zapata avoids the head kick by MacQuibble.
MacQuibble throws a head kick that misses.
MacQuibble throws a sloppy head kick and Zapata moves out of range easily.

Zapata takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
MacQuibble rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Zapata moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
MacQuibble fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Zapata checks it well.
Zapata throws a big counter combination but MacQuibble scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Zapata blocks a head kick by MacQuibble.
Zapata thinks about countering with a head kick.
MacQuibble blocks a low kick nicely.
We've been informed that MacQuibble has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Zapata is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that MacQuibble can do to turn this around?

Zapata clinches up against the cage.

MacQuibble leaves Zapata with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
MacQuibble feints and then cracks Zapata's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Zapata down.

Zapata has closed the distance and engaged MacQuibble in a clinch.
Zapata prevents MacQuibble from breaking the clinch.
MacQuibble with an attempt at a knee that misses.
MacQuibble wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Zapata escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Zapata drives through with a takedown into MacQuibble's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Zapata gets to his feet - MacQuibble follows without any prompting.

Zapata clinches.

Zapata's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Zapata cracks MacQuibble with an open hand slap.
MacQuibble tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
A little feinted left hand from Zapata on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Zapata defending well as MacQuibble loads up on a big left hand.
This has been an exciting period of action!
MacQuibble avoids the head kick by Zapata.
MacQuibble tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
The fight stays on the outside here - MacQuibble looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
MacQuibble throws a lazy head kick
and Zapata counters with a right, left combo that wobbles MacQuibble badly! Zapata follows up with a massive right hook, straight to the bridge of the nose that knocks MacQuibble out cold! Oh wow, what a finish! Very reminiscent of Koscheck vs Yoshida as Zapata finished him against the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:28 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Chief Zapata!
A very excited looking Chief Zapata made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
