PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between mighty mitch Mighty (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gary Lanier (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lanier has chosen Trapt-Headstrong as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, mighty mitch Mighty !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Gary Lanier!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Damien Edna and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mighty shoots in for a double leg but Lanier sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Mighty tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Lanier looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Mighty tries to clinch up.
Horrible takedown by Mighty or perhaps it was just good defense by Lanier which made him look bad.
Some wild striking there from Lanier.
Mighty really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Mighty shoots in for a double leg but Lanier sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for mighty mitch Mighty . That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mighty tries to work over Lanier's front leg with a kick but Lanier checks it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lanier gets to his feet - Mighty follows without any prompting.

Lanier closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Lanier wants to stand but Mighty is controlling his arm.
Mighty is trying to control Lanier's posture but Lanier avoids it.

Mighty tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Mighty can't do much from the bottom here.
Mighty manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Mighty punching from the bottom.
Mighty trying to control but Lanier postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mighty moves into full guard.
Mighty is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Mighty is trying to work for a kimura but Lanier is defending well.

Lanier is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Mighty pulls his head out easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Lanier wants to get back to his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Well, if Mighty is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gary Lanier dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Mighty throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Lanier.
Mighty fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.

and Lanier counters with a nice double leg into side control. Mighty won't be happy with that.
Mighty manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Lanier wants to get back to his feet.
Mighty wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lanier keeps working.

Mighty wants to control but Lanier is keeping him busy.

Lanier tries to roll over but Mighty keeps him under control.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Mighty with a poor takedown

and Lanier counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Lanier wants to stand but Mighty has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Mighty throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Lanier wants to get up but he can't break Mighty 's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Mighty is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Lanier wants to stand but Mighty has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Lanier stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mighty swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Lanier must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Mighty lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Lanier!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mighty wants to stand but Lanier is holding on to him, trying to stop him posturing up.
Lanier really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gary Lanier showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Mighty scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Lanier doesn't seem bothered though.

Lanier is looking to take a break and control but Mighty is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Lanier tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Mighty misses with a takedown

and Lanier counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Lanier.

Lanier's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Lanier throws a combination that misses
and Mighty counters with a three punch combo that has Lanier backing up. Lanier nods at Mighty to acknowledge the strikes.
Lanier lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Lanier swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Lanier scores with a shot to the body.
Mighty throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Lanier misses with a double jab.

Mighty shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Lanier counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Lanier escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Lanier doesn't manage to clinch there - Mighty circles away.
Mighty has his takedown stuffed
and Lanier cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Mighty wants to clinch but Lanier slips to the side

and Lanier counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Lanier is trying to control. Mighty wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Mighty is looking to get back to full guard here but Lanier has managed to pass to side control instead.
Lanier avoids the attempt from Mighty to control.
Gary Lanier is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Mighty is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Gary Lanier comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Lanier has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
