Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chief Zapata (ranked 1209 p4p, 2170 weight class) and Charlie Chan (ranked 183 p4p, 305 weight class). Charlie Chan has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chief Zapata!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Charlie Chan!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Alan Glass and Stewart Dunkirk.

Chan stuffs the takedown.
Chan jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Chan has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Zapata dives in for a single leg takedown but Chan sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Chan lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Zapata tries to score a power double leg takedown but Chan sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Zapata somewhat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chief Zapata. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Zapata shoots for a double leg takedown but Chan sprawls well. He's pushed Zapata's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Chan leaves Zapata with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Zapata feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Chan is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Chan has Zapata pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Zapata manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Zapata is trying to break the clinch but Chan has him pressed against the cage.

Chan's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Nice body punch from Chan.
Zapata shoots in but no luck this time.
Zapata gets cracked there but stands up to it.

and Zapata connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Chan shoots in looking for a takedown but Zapata manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Chan's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Zapata shoots in for a takedown but Chan shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Chan keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Zapata takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Zapata stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Zapata wants it to stay on the feet.
Chan throws a hook but Zapata blocks it.
Zapata shoots for a takedown but Chan saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Chan connects with a single shot there.
A jab from Chan misses.
Zapata slaps away a takedown attempt from Chan, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Zapata misses with a takedown attempt - Chan sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Chan connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Zapata momentarily.

Chan feints and as Zapata raises his hands in defense, Chan changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Zapata is wriggling around but Chan manages to pass to half guard.


Chan is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Zapata is just riding it out for now. Chan eventually gives up the hold.

Chan in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Zapata tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Chan!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Charlie Chan!
