PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Bird (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Justin Sane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bird comes to the cage accompanied by Bodies. The crowd seem to be enjoying Sane's choice of entrance music: More Human Than Human by White Zombie. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kevin Bird!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Justin Sane!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Robert Twigg and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sane scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Sane prevents Bird from improving his position.
Sane tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

Bird looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Sane lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Bird kicks off Sane and gets to his feet.
Sane wants to clinch.
Bird gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Sane counters with a single leg into guard. Bird didn't expect that.

Sane avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Bird is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bird wants to take a breather but Sane is having none of it.
Sane is looking to escape.

Sane is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Sane is not content to let Bird control the position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Sane is trying to get back to full guard.
Sane connecting with a few gentle strikes.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Sane looks to land a combination. Bird sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.


It looks like Kevin Bird has been cut.
Sane closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Bird is breathing heavily.

Sane shoots in and bounces Bird off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Sane working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Bird's head.
Sane wants to stand but Bird has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Sane stopping the sweep attempt from Bird.

Sane would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Bird might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Bird controls Sane momentarily but Sane frees himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bird is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Sane is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Bird working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sane doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sane manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sane wants to pass the guard but Bird is keeping the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Sane looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Sane wants to lay and pray for a moment but Bird keeps working.
Bird wants to get back to full guard but Sane has passed into side control.
Sane landing strikes, looking to finish!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Bird tries to hold on but Sane postures up.
Sane lands a nice shot to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Sane closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Bird to the mat! Bird manages to get full guard.
Bird manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Sane can't escape the position.
Sane is squirming around, avoiding Bird's attempts to control the action.
Bird is really struggling to control Sane but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Sane is trying desperately to improve position.
Bird trying to control but Sane is having none of it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Bird works his way to his opponent's back.
Bird has the hooks in. Sane is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Sane turns into Bird and is now in his guard.

Sane must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Sane stands up and waves to Bird to follow him.

Bird gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Sane counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Sane really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Bird. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Bird looking to hit a scissor sweep but Sane is one step ahead there.
Bird wants to get back to his feet but Sane is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Sane chips away with some ground and pound.

Bird has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sane can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Sane controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Bird is trying to control the position but Sane postures up.

Sane wants to control from the top but Bird keeps moving.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Sane goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Sane scores with a nice strike.
Sane blocks a head kick by Bird.

Sane tries to free his leg and advance position but Bird is retaining full guard.

Bird is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Sane tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Sane lands a big shot there that rocks Bird but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Bird manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Bird is looking for a sweep. Sane is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Sane trying to control the action but Bird is working from the bottom.
Bird wants to control but Sane is keeping busy.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Bird is pressing down on Sane's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Sane has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Bird escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sane gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Bird has his foot on Sane's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sane works his way back into a safe position though.

Bird is working an open guard so Sane takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

and Sane counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kevin Bird. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sane is thwarting Bird's attempts to control the position.
Sane lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Sane wants to free his trapped foot but Bird is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Sane is trying to control. Bird wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Sane makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Bird is trying to keep Sane in close.
Sane works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Sane thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Bird's head.
Bird is not content to let Sane control the position.
Sane is pressing down on Bird's thigh, looking to free his foot. Bird is holding on for now.
Bird is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Sane scores with a couple of nice shots.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Sane looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Bird with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Kevin Bird has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Justin Sane is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Justin Sane comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sane has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
