PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jan Hradek (ranked 1479 p4p, 173 weight class) and Tom Dirk (ranked 1647 p4p, 189 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Jan Hradek has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Jan Hradek seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jan Hradek!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tom Dirk!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Matti Vanhoillinen and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Dirk moves into the clinch.
Dirk is struggling to control the position.
Hradek is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Hradek fails to pull guard.
Dirk lands a body punch in the clinch.

Hradek pulls guard.
Dirk's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Hradek trying to control the position.

Hradek has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Dirk can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Dirk avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Dirk must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Dirk controlling from the top position.
Dirk missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Dirk wants to pass the guard but Hradek is keeping the position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Dirk tries to free his leg and advance position but Hradek is retaining full guard.

Hradek is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Dirk defends well.
Dirk controls from within his opponent's guard.

Dirk avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Dirk passes Hradek's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Hradek has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Dirk escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Dirk!
Hradek tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Dirk wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Hradek is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Dirk's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Hradek gets full guard.

Dirk drops back looking for a leg! Hradek is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hradek manages to kick Dirk off! Dirk jumps back into Hradek's guard.

Hradek being controlled here, momentarily.
Hradek is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Dirk moves into the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Dirk dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Hradek with a lazy takedown attempt
and Dirk counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Hradek will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Dirk let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Hradek shoots in for a double leg but Dirk sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jan Hradek. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Dirk scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Hradek tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Dirk swivels and escapes.
Dirk has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Hradek is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Dirk throws a series of punches but Hradek avoids them all with ease.
Hradek lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.

Oooooh!!! Dirk has knocked Hradek down with a huge combo! Dirk steps away and waves a wobbly Hradek back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!


It looks like Jan Hradek has been cut.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Dirk drives through and clinches with Hradek against the cage.

Dirk manages to break the clinch.
Hradek throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Jan Hradek is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Dirk shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Dirk showed some decent athleticism there.
Dirk not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Dirk controlling the action here.
Dirk tries to stand and escape but Hradek is controlling the position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Well, if Dirk is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Dirk is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Dirk passes into half guard.
Dirk throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Dirk is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Hradek defends it well.

Hradek looking for submissions off his back.

Dirk wants to stand but Hradek has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Well, if Dirk is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Dirk gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Dirk slowing the pace effectively.

Dirk pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Hradek misses with a takedown attempt - Dirk sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Hradek jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Dirk walks away with a smile on his face. Hradek gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Hradek fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Dirk scores with a jab to the jaw.

Dirk has Hradek up against the cage in a clinch.
Still in the clinch, Dirk scores with a nice short uppercut.

Dirk pulls guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Dirk showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Jan Hradek's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


The fighters circle momentarily. Dirk darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

Dirk drives through and clinches with Hradek against the cage.

Dirk's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Hradek looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Dirk rushes Hradek and presses him up against the cage.
Hradek tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Dirk just stands there and leans against the cage.
Hradek tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Dirk smiles and moves away.
Dirk lands with an uppercut that bounces Hradek off the cage and back into range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Dirk moves into the clinch.
Dirk pushes Hradek back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Dirk content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Hradek is trying to pull guard but Dirk has him pressed against the cage.

Still in the clinch, Dirk scores with a nice short uppercut.

Dirk breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Tom Dirk seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A punch combination from Dirk misses.
Dirk has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Dirk has Hradek up against the cage in a clinch.
Hradek jumps guard but Dirk stands there with Hradek around his waist. Hradek gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Hradek tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Hradek tries to pull guard but Dirk forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Dirk pulls Hradek into guard.
Dirk looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hradek is one step ahead there.

Hradek in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Dirk can do anything to dispel that myth.
Hradek won't allow Dirk to get back to his feet.
Dirk pulls Hradek in close to his closed guard and prevents Hradek from doing any damage or advancing position.
Hradek throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Tom Dirk has got the better of the ground game so far.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hradek wants to control from the top but Dirk keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hradek throws a head kick but Dirk moves out of range.
A head kick misses from Hradek.

Hradek gets tackled into the cage by Dirk. Dirk maintains the clinch.

Hradek has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Dirk uses from the top position.
Dirk would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Hradek working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Dirk doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Dirk manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Dirk seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Dirk slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Dirk tries to get to his feet but Hradek is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Dirk in his guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Dirk's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Dirk really dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Jan Hradek's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Dirk connects with the punch.
Hradek shoots in looking for a takedown but Dirk manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Hradek's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Dirk lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Hradek backs up against the cage.
Dirk scores with a jab. Hradek acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Horrible takedown attempt by Hradek or perhaps it was just good defense by Dirk, which made it look bad.
Hradek loses concentration momentarily and Dirk pounces with a three punch combo! Right, left, right! Hradek crashes face first to the mat, out cold! Dirk finishes this one with a fantastically precise combo! Great stuff.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:45 of round 4, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Tom Dirk!
Tom Dirk is the new heavyweight champion!
Tom Dirk decided to call for a title shot in his post fight interview, which was very strange given the fact this fight was for a title and he's already the champion. I guess that's what getting punched in the head does for you.
