PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Luis Armando (ranked 6432 p4p, 462 weight class) and Jan Kowalski (ranked 25203 p4p, 546 weight class). Jan Kowalski is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Luis Armando!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Jan Kowalski!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Andrew Berry and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kowalski moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Armando feints and then cracks Kowalski's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Kowalski down.
Armando tries for a takedown but Kowalski circles away easily
and Kowalski counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Armando moves out of range as Kowalski throws a body kick.
Jan Kowalski seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Armando rushes Kowalski and presses him up against the cage.

Kowalski breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Kowalski throws a combination that misses

and Armando counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Kowalski manages to escape and get back to his feet!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Armando clinches with his opponent.
Kowalski gets underhooks to prevent Armando's takedown attempt.

Armando is trying to trip Kowalski. He has hold of a leg but Kowalski is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Armando persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Kowalski escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Armando gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Kowalski holds on and takes a little breather.
Armando stands and throws Kowalski's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Kowalski is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Armando takes a little break here. Kowalski wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Kowalski really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Armando. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Kowalski looks to move to half guard but instead Armando has passed into mount! Damn!

Armando seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Kowalski for as long as he can get away with.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Kowalski is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.

Armando jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Kowalski manages to avoid the submission attempt.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Armando advances to full mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Luis Armando will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Kowalski rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Armando moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
It looked like Armando wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Armando fails with the takedown.
Kowalski throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Armando looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger.
Armando blocks a low kick nicely.

Armando tries to keep at a distance but Kowalski has taken the fight into the clinch.
Kowalski tries to break free but Armando pushes him back against the cage.
Kowalski is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Armando tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Kowalski smiles and moves away.
Kowalski fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Armando tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Kowalski defends well and Armando ends up having to push Kowalski into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Luis Armando. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kowalski lands a jab to the nose.
Armando keeps the fight on the outside.
Kowalski throws a body kick, spinning off balance
and Armando counters with a good low kick that Kowalski was not able to check.
Armando tries to clinch up but Kowalski circles away and keeps his distance.
Kowalski doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.

Armando throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Kowalski throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Kowalski has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Armando tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Kowalski smiles and moves away.
Armando shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Kowalski sprawls well. Kowalski wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Armando gets slowly back to his feet.

Kowalski will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Armando closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kowalski did well to prevent Armando getting side control.

Armando blocks the strikes from Kowalski.
Armando throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Kowalski felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Armando is taking a breather. Kowalski says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Jan Kowalski showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Armando fires out a quick counter leg kick but Kowalski just manages to avoid it.

Kowalski tries to kick Armando off but Armando keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Kowalski wants to get back to full guard.
Kowalski is trying to maintain the position but Armando is very close to passing his half guard.

Kowalski wants to get back to his feet.

Armando wants to work for an arm triangle but Kowalski is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kowalski is trying to stand up here but Armando is controlling him well.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kowalski is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Armando tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Kowalski manages to circle out of the way.

Armando jumps into guard, dragging Kowalski to the mat.
Armando pulls Kowalski in close to his closed guard and prevents Kowalski from doing any damage or advancing position.

Armando escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kowalski gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Armando throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Armando is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Kowalski stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Armando swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Armando is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kowalski wants to stand but Armando has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Kowalski drops back looking for a leg! Armando is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Armando manages to kick Kowalski off! Kowalski jumps back into Armando's guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Armando pulls Kowalski in close to prevent any damage.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Armando tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Armando takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Jan Kowalski.
I think Kowalski has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
