Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Patricio Pereira!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kevin Garbutt!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Darius Henderson and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pereira ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Garbutt throws a looping overhand right but Pereira ducks down to avoid it.

Pereira drives through with a takedown into guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Pereira thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Pereira tries to free his leg and advance position but Garbutt is retaining full guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Garbutt can do anything to dispel that myth.

Pereira pushes Garbutt off looking to stand but Garbutt dives back in and keeps control.

Pereira is refusing to be controlled, as Garbutt sits in half guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pereira's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Garbutt connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Pereira scrambles back to his feet.
Pereira shoots in looking for a takedown. Garbutt tries to sprawl out of it but Pereira keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Garbutt manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Patricio Pereira seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Well Garbutt has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Davidson scores with the left hand. Lay knows he should have avoided that one.

Davidson is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Lay.
Peter Lay is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Lay shoots for a double leg takedown but Davidson sprawls well. He's pushed Lay's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

I would just about give that final round to Peter Lay.

Turner lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Pepot circles away quickly and effectively.
Turner looks to land a combination but Pepot avoids it well.
Pepot takes a swing at Turner's ribcage but misses.
Sloppy strikes from Turner. Those never looked like landing.
Turner has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Pepot is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Turner takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Turner just misses with a punch to the body.
Don Pepot seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pepot connects with a single shot there.
Nice shot lands for Pepot.
Pepot's jab looks to have found its range, popping Turner under the eye.

Turner is rocked!

It looks like Frank Turner has been cut.
Turner drops his hands momentarily. Pepot doesn't need a second invitation, landing a shot to the temple. Turner staggers and falls to the mat and the ref dives in to save him from any more punishment. Turner doesn't seem happy with the stoppage but he was done.

The fight stays on the outside here - Van Black looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Speed misses with a low kick.
Speed connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

It looks like Marshal Van Black has been cut.
Van Black with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Speed to score with a decent uppercut.
Speed fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Van Black checks it well.
Speed clobbers Van Black with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Speed misses with a body kick.
Speed closes the distance but Van Black moves to the side

and Van Black counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Van Black slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Van Black wants to control from the top but Speed keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Van Black's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Van Black trying to control but Speed is working from the bottom.
Van Black is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Van Black working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Van Black controls from within his opponent's guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Leroy Speed seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Donk. Speed catches Van Black right on the button with a cross.
Speed slaps away a takedown attempt from Van Black, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Van Black fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Van Black looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Speed is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Van Black.
Speed scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.

Marshal Van Black's cut is getting worse.

Speed lands a left and a right that send Van Black crashing to the mat, dazed. Speed thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

Van Black is rocked!
Van Black walks right into a perfectly timed right hook and goes down hard! He's out cold! The ref cradles Van Black limp body while Speed jumps on to the cage and waves to the roaring crowd. Wow that was just a brutal knockout!

Ken stuffs the takedown attempt from Ma Aka. Ma Aka gets slowly back to his feet.
Ma Aka shoots in for a double leg but Ken sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Ken misses with a few strikes there.
Ma Aka with a lazy takedown attempt
and Ken counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Shogun Ken has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Arapeta Ma Aka.
Ken swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Ma Aka looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Ken!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Ma Aka is working to tighten his grip on Ken's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Ken has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Ma Aka is really squeezing tight and eventually Ken passes out! Ma Aka breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:43 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Arapeta Ma Aka!
During a confident post fight interview, Arapeta Ma Aka thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
