Kakuto closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Suzuki did well to prevent Kakuto getting side control.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from James.
Smith throws a hook to the side of James's head but James sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Hugo Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
James ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Smith.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
James tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Smith wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Smith is looking to take a break and control but James is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
