Mendes shoots in looking for a takedown. Down tries to sprawl out of it but Mendes keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Down manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Mendes fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Down to the ground. Mendes is now in Down's guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

A brutal knockout and then some excellent sportsmanship - this guy is my new favorite fighter!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Swayze misses with a jab, cross combination.
Swayze fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Piscopo shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Swayze as he avoids it easily.
Piscopo misses with a combination
and Swayze counters with a good low kick that Piscopo was not able to check.
Piscopo uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Swayze.
Piscopo tries to score a power double leg takedown but Swayze sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Piscopo somewhat.
Piscopo misses with a double jab.
Swayze connects with an inside leg kick.
Swayze throws a looping overhand right but Piscopo ducks down to avoid it.
Piscopo slips a straight right by Swayze.

Piscopo closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Swayze to the mat! Swayze manages to get full guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Swayze is looking to stand up but Piscopo isn't so interested in that idea.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Swayze can do anything to dispel that myth.
Piscopo stays in close to Swayze's body and controls the position.
Swayze keeping full guard, as Piscopo tries to pass.
Swayze is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Swayze is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Swayze might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Piscopo kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Brett Swayze hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Swayze pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Swayze swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Swayze misses with a hook. Piscopo ducked under it nicely.
Swayze throws a solid leg kick but Piscopo takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Swayze.
Swayze misses with a looping left.
Brett Swayze seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Swayze tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Piscopo was well out of range. Poor timing from Swayze.
Swayze looks to land a left hand but Piscopo moved out of range nicely.

Piscopo changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Swayze tries to avoid it but Piscopo manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Swayze to the ground. Swayze escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Swayze ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Piscopo moves away.
Brett Swayze is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Swayze lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.

Swayze throws a shot to the body.
Some wild striking there from Swayze.
Swayze lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Piscopo ducks under a wild hook from Swayze.

Swayze is not content to let Piscopo control the position.
Piscopo sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Swayze is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

You can see the frustration on Swayze's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Smith changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Folignus looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Smith lands an elbow.
Smith in side control, throwing shots but Folignus defends.
Smith working the ground and pound but Folignus is defending the strikes.
Folignus sneaks back into half guard.
Folignus blocking the ground and pound attempt from Smith.
Smith takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Smith slips a nice elbow through Folignus's hands, connecting with Folignus's forehead.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Smith lands a heavy elbow.
Folignus tries to lock up and control but Smith gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Folignus sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Smith is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Folignus keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Smith distracts Folignus with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Smith throws a big elbow that misses.
Smith working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Smith got a little sloppy there for a moment and Folignus has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Smith has managed to get both his arms back between Folignus's legs - danger averted.

Smith stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Folignus throws up his legs and catches Smith in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Smith tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Folignus! That came out of nowhere!
