The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A punch combination from Smith misses.

Smith throws a hook but Frankin blocks it.

Smith gets caught flat footed, as Frankin shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Frankin stands and throws Smith's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Frankin is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Smith pushes Frankin away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Frankin gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chad Hua!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Spiidi Haukka!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Dillan Fox and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Haukka shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hua's guard.
Haukka is looking to stand up but Hua won't let him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hua throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Hua is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Haukka is looking to improve his position.

Haukka is looking to control Hua's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Haukka avoid being mounted?

Hua darts in trying to clinch

and Haukka counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Haukka postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Hua to stand up.
Haukka thows a body shot but no joy.

Hua moves into the clinch successfully.
Hua wants to break free but Haukka has control.

Haukka escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Hua fails with the takedown

and Haukka counters with a takedown into side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Haukka throwing strikes but Hua manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
Haukka tries to buck Hua off but Hua is having none of it.
Haukka looks to move to half guard but instead Hua has passed into mount! Damn!

Hua lands a big shot there that rocks Haukka but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Haukka tries to lock up and control but Hua gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Haukka has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
Haukka is keeping busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hua has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Haukka slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Haukka looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Haukka stops Hua from getting back to his feet.
Hua is refusing to be controlled, as Haukka sits in half guard.
Hua moves into full guard.
Haukka is fighting to break Hua's control of his arms but Hua is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Hua really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Hua is looking for a triangle here but Haukka uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Hua gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Hua holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
