HFC 6 - Review

What can I say, the boys in the HFC can finish!  Another night with several more first round KO's and great MMA entertainment! This card featured two title fights, for the Featherweight and Super Heavyweight championships of the HFC!   Balkan vs Denver   Our first fight of the evening was a match between Boris Balkan and Zander Denver.  Two HFC originals, these fighters knew what the HFC was all bout.  Big shots, blood, and quick finisheds!   In his first ever HFC fight, a long time in the making, Balkan is very strong MT fighter who was facing off against another MT striker with a little BJJ training in Denver.   Denver landed a solid leg kick before Balkan scored a quick punch combo and two hard strikes to end the night for Denver at only 17 seconds into the first round!  Not a HFC best, but a very quick end to an otherwise entertaining fight.   Lane vs Minh   Minh, a browler with a good chin, facing off against Lane, a MT striker who prides himself in his conditioning.   Lane came out of the gates swinging and never let up as long as his feet were under him.  Landing 28 of his 40 strikes, and a handful of kicks, he dominated the stand up with his MT.  Minh was able to get the fight to the ground a few times, but was stuffed at every turn for the most part of the fight.  He was only able to take the fight to the mat 4 of his 27 attempts.  To say he was gassed by the end of this fight is an understatement.   When on the ground, Minh showed the ability to improve his positioning, as Lane had no answer for him on the ground, but never seemed interested in doing anything when the fight was on the ground.  Not sure what his strategy was, and neither were the judges as they award the unanimous decision victory to Gumby Lane in a well deserved win!   Denisov vs Faber   In our third bout of the evening, the cardio machine Denisov stepped into the cage against moonwalking divisional opponent Faber who entered the fight with an impresive 4-1 start to his early MMA career.   Despite his 2-5 record, Denisov came out and dominated the fight when Faber took it to the ground.  He got into position and reigned down ground and pound on Faber ending the fight by way of knock out only 2:36 into the first round.   Vader vs Machado   Machado entered this fight with a 1-1 record looking to score a big win against verteran opponent Vader (5-4).  Machado entered the fight looking to get it to the ground, but was unable to as Vader was playing a defensive game only throwing combos looking to catch the judges eyes.  It only took 1:16 for those combos to take their tole and put Machado in a bad way as Vader channeled his inner Manny and just unleashed a flurry of strikes forcing the refs to jump in and stop the fight.   Gracie vs The Blade   Borris the Blade, an undefeated striker walking into the cage in the HFC for the second time against newcomer BJJ submission specialist Gracie.  Blade was full of confidence having ended each of his 6 previous fights by KO, and 5 of them in the first round.  He surely expected to do this again against Gracie, but was unable to keep the fight standing and fell into Gracie's domain.     Gracie wasted no time working in a Kimura and forced Blade to tap out, ending his undefeated bid within the division.  I know he'll be back and ready to avenge that loss while the rest of the division should put Gracie on alert.   Garak vs Marley   Marley, a cardio machine with good takedowns stepped into the cage to face a MT striker who also is known for his cardio.  Both fighters with very similar records, and ToTT, this fight was highly anticipated by many of the HFC fans in attendance.   The fans may have waited for weeks to watch the fight, but it only took 1:36 into the first round to see the result of the fight as Garak wasted no time putting Marley on the defensive and turned out the lights with a TKO victory following a nasty hook and some nice ground and pound.   Marley never had a chance to get the fight to the ground due to Garaks quick start and finish.  Garak looks like he's in prime position to give the championship a run for it's money, what do you think?   Johnston vs Jack   Another highly anticipated match up between two fighters with similar records, each proving over again that they can compete at a high level in the HFC.   Both good wrestlers with similar skill sets, everyone expected a brawl and a brawl they got.  Going the distance, each fighter grappled for dominance for 15 strait minutes.  Johnston was the aggressor in positioning, but Jack threw a few more strikes and was far more accurate in his ground and pound.   Due to this, the judges awared the victory to Jack by way of unanimous decision!   Tai Kung vs Bogger   Another fight going the distance was Tai Kung vs Bogger.    Tai Kung sports an undefeated 8-0 record with his lethal kicks and great conditioning.  Bogger enters a solid experienced fighter with a 7-5 record.     There was no shortage of action as these two warriors battled it out for every minute of all three rounds.  Tai Kung was the more aggressive fighter all around, even in the clinch, and as neither fighter could finish the other, the judges awared the easy decision to still undefeated Tai Kung.  This man needs to set his sights on the championship!   Luger vs Slugs   The co-main event of the evening, a championship bout between former HFC super heavyweight champion of the HFC and former SMASH super heavyweight champion Slugs to duke it out to determine the new HFC super heavyweight champion of the world. After the title had been vacated during the merger as Gracie left the org, a new champion needed to be crowned.  These two fighters both know what it means to be a champion, and was a logical fight to determine the new champion moving forward. From homeless to champion, Luger squared off against the ever dangerous Slugs in a fight that would be a huge mark on their careers.  Luger saw a quick end to his night as some nasty elbows by Slugs opened up a huge cut on his head forcing the doctors to stop the fight due to medical concern.   Congratulations to Slugs for re-capturing the HFC Super Heavyweight championship of the world!  I hope to see these two fighters square off again down the road one day to see what kind of fight this would have been without that cut.   Leopold vs Havoc   In our main event of the evening, we have a championship bout in the featherweight division between defending champion Corbin Leopold and the challanger Wreak Havoc!   This fight was another to go the distance, but perhaps it would have have done so had the fight rules been set up properly.  Both fighters showed championship class and skill and a very close fight ultimately fell into the hands of the judges to determine the championship status.   Both fighters active standing, both active in the clinch, they beat the hell out of each other for three solid rounds but ultimately, someone had to be declared a winner, and someone had to go home and ponder a comeback.   The fight went to the judges scorecards where they awareded Havoc the championship via split decision!  Congradulations to Havoc for winning the belt, but don't be surprised to see a rematch of this fight in the near future as Leopold may feel he was robbed of the belt in a 3 round fight that close.
