Starting A Fight Organization - The Basics

Editorial by Chuck Grace

Starting a successful company is probably one of the most difficult tasks in the tycooniverse.  I've had some success in this area so I thought why not do a quick story about how to develop a successful company in MMATycoon.  Now being that my only real in-depth experience with companies has been with a fight company I thought that I would focus on that company style in this edition of starting a successful company.

So "how do I go about starting a fight organization to begin with?" you ask.  Well for starters I suggest you do some research, because if you don't chances are you're org will wind up a mess, with a short roster, and quickly going broke.  So you're going to want to start with clicking on the "My Business's" icon under the VIP heading, and then the "Start New Company" link at the top.  For a shortcut here is the link http://mmatycoon.com/startnewcompany.php.  Now this is where your research begins.  You'll want to look about halfway down the page to where it breaks out how many of each company type are currently in play in each city.  So for our purposes let's check out Orgs.  You'll notice it makes narrowing things down rather simple by showing you in red/green, based on the 120 OK principal, what areas COULD use another fight company.  However, it should be noted that this doesn't mean that any city NEEDS a new fight company.  For our purposes we'll assume one of these areas does, in fact, need a new org.  So how do we proceed?  Well let's pick the areas with the highest fighter to org ratio.  So as I'm looking at the numbers this is Rio(175.33) and St. Petes(156.25).  Now what you're also going to want to check into is quality of competition in the area.  Is one of the areas lacking in entry level orgs?  What about middle of the road orgs?  Is there the possibility of creating a "specialty" org in the city ie - K1, BJJ rules only etc?  To create your company enter the new company name in the "Company Name" slot, select your location, and company type.  If you have some money you want to sink into the company enter the amount in allocate funds, and should you require a bank loan enter the amount which can be up to $50,000.  Now click the "Yeah, I get it, companies are hard work but I'm starting one anyway!" button.  Congrats you've just opened a fight org!

Ok so, for example purposes, now we've decided that St. Petes is in need of an entry level org.  We've created our new company, now what?  First things first we need talent.  So let's try to convince people ours is the company they'd like to sign with.  First of all you're going to be trying to recruit brand new fighters so expect some to go inactive pretty quickly it's just the nature of the business we're in.  However I've found if you keep an open line of communication with these newer managers it drastically increases the chances they'll stick around our lovely game.  So for starters if all you started the company with was the $50,000 loan you were allowed then we need to get fighters on the cheap!  Typically to get 0-0 fighters or fighters there about you should be offering a 3-4 fight deal for $500/$500/$500.  Now you're sure to get numerous declines to this offer so don't get discouraged.  I suggest putting something in the comment section of the contract offer letting them know something about your company, and that this is a preliminary offer open to counters.  Now you're not going to be able to go much higher so keep that in mind during these talks.  Top dollar you want to shell out shouldn't be above $750/$750/$750, and that'll only be for a few fighters.

Ok so now we have a decent sized roster, and are thinking of holding our first event.  Make sure you have at least 20 active fighters before booking your first event, and also book it around 4 weeks from the day you create it.  You want to give your new fighters a chance to accept the offers, and more then likely get some training in before their debuts.  Ok again for our purposes we meet all the requirements.  So we're booking an arena today, November 14th, for an event on December 10th.  So let's click on the "Book New Event" tab on your org manager page.  Now here is one of the more important parts of this style of company.  You're going to want to get this right, and the first time.  Having to cancel an event will hurt your org hype, so let's do this properly, shall we.  First up is the event name.  Pretty simple name it whatever you want.  Next is the date click the little calendar, and for out example we'd pick Dec 10th, which happens to be a Saturday, and that gives you the best day multiplier.  More on those later.  City is up next, again for our example, we'll pick St. Petes.  Now we have a decision to make.  What size arena do I need to book?  In my experience booking the small 400 seat arena is a waste of time.  You'll want to try for the 700 or 750 arena.  You're not going to sell this out, but we can still pack the seats with free tickets.  Now you'll choose what judging system to use whole fight/10 point must this is entirely up to each individual.  Next up is number of fights, and since we waited to have 20 active fighters we will select 10.  Ring or cage is up next, again completely up to the individual.  Now that you have set all these let's go back, and click the little box next to the arena, and click book it.  The only other thing you need to enter, for now, is the production value.  The general consensus is that $4 per seat is a good number to use for your production value.  So multiply the seats in your venue by 4, and input that number here.  We'll figure out the ad spend, and free tickets once the card is finalized.

So now comes the matchmaking.  With this being a new fighter org chances are everyone should match up fairly close.  Generally matchmaking is done on the fighters plus page following fighter hype/pop and rank.  Sometimes a more in depth scout of the fighters is required should you have a higher ID'd fighter jump himself up the rankings, and doesn't match up well against the lower ID'd fighters currently dominating the top of the division.  However, for our example here you won't have that issue.  So make the fights, and then click the save button at the bottom of the screen.

Now that's pretty much your event booked, and awaiting fighters to accept/decline their fight offers.  So let's skip to all the fights being accepted.  What now?  Well now we have to crunch some numbers for your ad spend and free tickets to give out.  There are so many different ways people have developed to come up with these numbers.  I feel, since this is aimed at a first time org owner, that you can't go wrong with tycoontools.com.  Just go to that site enter your event ID in the event helper, and not only will it break down how much to put in your ad spend, and a projected number of ticket sales based on the card, but it will also show you each fights average hype so you can re-order your fights back on the event manager screen.  I'm sure numerous people will have issue with my saying to use this site, but for the noob org owner I think this is a great tool for you.  I should point out, however, that there is a new version of the site out, and once you click the "Event Helper" you should go to your browser address bar, and add a 2 after the helper to get the newest version.  To reorder your fights simply open up the edit event screen from your org manager page, and scroll down to the fights.  On the red bar labeled "The Fights" you'll see reorder fights on the right.  Click that, and it'll take you to a very easy to use page that you adjust the fights using an up or down arrow on the right of each fight.

This is the basics of starting a fight org, and getting through your first event.  Running an org for the long haul requires quite a bit of work, and dedication to the company.  Depending on how this article is received I'll put together another getting into the more in depth side of running this style of company.
