SFL 61: Stanley vs. Tyson kicked off last night (this morning? Afternoon? Who knows what time it was in Russia. It may have been tomorrow afternoon.) at the Kazan Sambo Center, and by all accounts was a roaring success. The two main themes of the evening were watch out for uppercuts and last minute subs. all three submission victories were by triangle, and two of the victims tapped with less than five seconds left in the round. The event scored a 299.79 rating, the highest at SFL (at least in recent history) and featured a full night of exciting fights. If you were unfortunate enough to miss it, here's what happened:

145 lb- CAOL UNO def ASHLEY HENDRICKS via TKO 4:55 R2 Hendricks won the first round with a takedown, but was unable to mount an offensive plan from the top. Uno kept chipping away with jabs and combos, and eventually landed a nice shot that put Hendricks to sleep late in the second round.

155 lb- JOSEPH MONTFERRAND def YO ESHIMURO via TKO 1:51 R1 Yo tried to smother Montferrand in the clinch, but Montferrand bided his time and scored a powerful combo that put Yo on his back. Never one to let an opportunity to punch someone in the face, Montferrand dove on top and finished Eshimuro with strikes.

265+ lb- AKE JOHANSSON def LUCAS BANE via KO 2:23 R2 Bane scored with some single shots in round one, but had trouble stringing his combos together. Johansson kept his distance and scored a solid takedown at the end of the round. In round two, Johansson opened up with his fist and scored a series of powerful shots that left Bane unconscious.

185 lb- IGOR GAGO def ANTHONY JACARSON via Sub (Triangle) 4:56 R1 Jacarson got off to a good start, tearing Gago apart with kicks and punches early in the round, but Gago was relentless in his pursuit of the takedown. Once on the ground, Igor fished for subs until he caught a triangle. If Jacarson would have held off four more seconds he could have survived the round; but, he didn't.

265 lb- ARSTON SELMY def JASON ROGERS via TKO (Cut) 1:29 R2 Rogers was cut by a sharp uppercut in round one, then gave up an early takedown. Selmy pumished Rogers for four and a half minutes, opening his cut wider and wider and painting the mat with blood. Rogers himself scored with a stinging punch that cut Selmy in round two, but Selmy got another takedown and opened Rogers even further with elbows. Mercifully, the doctor spoke up and ended the bloodbath.

170 lb- JOHN HAIGH def CAMERON POE via Sub (Triangle) 4:59 R2 that's right. 4:59. One second away from salvation and a chance to restart the fight. Haigh did his best to stay out of the clinch, but once Poe had his grips secured Haigh was the one who did the most damage from that position, and easily won the round despite being opened up by Poe's elbow. In round two, Haigh scored a takedown, and the two men went back and forth before Haigh finally locked up the triangle. These things happen, but I'm sure Poe is getting speeches from his coach about heart and cage awareness.

185 lb- JONI VVIT def MATTHEW GODBOLT via KO 1:51 R2 In round one, Godbolt scored with repeated takedowns; however, he couldn't keep the slippery Vvit on the mat. On the feet, Vvit put on a boxing clinic, eventually scoring with a powerful knockout shot.

145 lb TITLE- TYRION LANNISTER def NIKOLAI PETERSON via Decision Lannister poured it on from bell to bell, displaying remarkable cardio and a relentless pace. Everyone's favorite little person refused to be slowed down, despite som powerful shots landed by Peterson. Lannister shrugged off every Peterson offensive and landed many leg kicks and body shots to slow his opponent down and win a lopsided point decision. The new FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION of SFL: TYRION LANNISTER!

155 lb- BOBBY BUTCHER def RAFINHA CAPOEIRA via KO :51 R1 Butcher swarmed Capoeira from the bell, and Capoeira failed to slow Butcher down with his repeated clinch attempts. Unable to mount any kind of offense, Capoeira covered up and Butcher was able to connect with a fight-ending shot through Capoeira's defense.

265 lb TITLE MAIN EVENT- MIKE TYSON def KYLE STANLEY via Sub (Triangle) 2:55 R2 Tyson, known as a boxer, surprised everyone with an early takedown in round one, but Stanley swept and kept the pressure on Tyson with some wicked ground and pound. It looked like Stanley was winning the ground war, and it was no surprise to see him score a takedown right off the bat in round two. However, Tyson went berserk from the bottom, chaining together submissions and finally scoring with a picture-perfect triangle. The new SFL HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION: "IRON" MIKE TYSON

Titles changing hands, blood staining the floor and brains shut off from lack of oxygen; I don't know what more an MMA fan could hope for. Maiming? Death? Explosions? There is a very good chance SFL will deliver. Tune in next time and find out who won the Of the Night awards for SFL 61!
