The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Smith takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Drake shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense.
Drake looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Smith pushes Drake off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Smith throws a head kick that misses.
Drake fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.

Smith fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Drake looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Smith tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Drake was well out of range. Poor timing from Smith.
Mike Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Smith's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
Drake throws a low kick but Smith avoids it.
Drake wants to clinch up but Smith keeps it at a distance.

Mike Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Damian Drake.
