PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ishaar Abbassi (ranked 4640 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kristaps Zutis (ranked 3336 p4p, 0 weight class). Abbassi comes into the arena with Gangster Rap Made Me Do It blaring out of the sound system. Kristaps Zutis is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ishaar Abbassi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kristaps Zutis!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Eliza Hachem and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zutis lands a lovely overhand right.
Zutis tries for a takedown but Abbassi sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Zutis fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Abbassi changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

Zutis closes the distance and clinches.
Abbassi has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Zutis after a bit of a struggle.
Zutis gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Abbassi.
Abbassi is looking to take this one to the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ishaar Abbassi. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Zutis is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Abbassi can't fight it off and eventually Zutis manages to take the fight to the floor. Abbassi looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Abbassi has gone for a leg lock! Zutis slips out almost immediately though and dives into Abbassi's guard.

Abbassi is controlling Zutis's posture.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Abbassi can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Zutis controls the pace.
Abbassi manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Zutis manages to get himself to full guard.


Abbassi is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Zutis is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Zutis has escaped and now he's on top!

Abbassi might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Abbassi holds on and takes a little breather.
Zutis is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Zutis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Zutis wants to stand and escape but instead Abbassi has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Abbassi drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Zutis manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Abbassi has Zutis in his guard.

Zutis must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Zutis is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kristaps Zutis dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Zutis fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Abbassi avoids it really well and circles away.
Abbassi half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Zutis tries to clinch there but Abbassi circles away.
Zutis shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Zutis throws a series of punches but Abbassi avoids them all with ease.
Zutis shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Abbassi as he avoids it easily.
Abbassi drops down looking for a counter takedown but Zutis sprawls and moves away.
Ishaar Abbassi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kristaps Zutis.

Abbassi is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Zutis has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Zutis is looking to clinch but Abbassi is avoiding it.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Zutis is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Abbassi is defending well for now.

Zutis turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Zutis manages to end up in side control.
Abbassi tries to bench press Zutis off him but Zutis keeps the position.
Zutis wants to take a breather but Abbassi manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Zutis.
Abbassi is adopting a defensive guard.

Zutis controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Abbassi has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Abbassi wants to sweep here but Zutis controlling him for the moment.
Zutis trying to control the position from guard on top but Abbassi is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Abbassi avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Zutis.
Abbassi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Zutis wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Abbassi managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Zutis.
Zutis is looking to take a break and control but Abbassi is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Abbassi wants to control but Zutis postures up.

Kristaps Zutis showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Abbassi is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Zutis tries to get to full guard but Abbassi has control of the leg.

Abbassi is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Abbassi is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Zutis is just riding it out for now. Abbassi eventually gives up the hold.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Abbassi is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Zutis has managed to free his arm - good work.

Zutis is doing well to control the position and prevent Abbassi from advancing to side control.

Abbassi is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Zutis defends it well.

Abbassi is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Zutis is just riding it out for now. Abbassi eventually gives up the hold.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Abbassi is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Kristaps Zutis comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Zutis has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
