PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Diego Sanchez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Garturo Aatti (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sanchez is coming into this fight with a significant injury, which will no doubt have an effect on his cardio. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Diego Sanchez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Garturo Aatti!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Chad Campbell and Eddie Farnsworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Aatti drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Sanchez is breathing heavily.
Aatti in side control, just content to control the action for now.

Aatti tries to advance to mount but can't.
Aatti is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Sanchez will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Aatti is staying tight to Sanchez's torso, preventing him from escaping.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Despite being in the dominant position, Garturo Aatti just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Aatti will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Aatti bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
A lull in the action here as Aatti stalls from top position.
Aatti's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Despite being in the dominant position, Garturo Aatti just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Aatti moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sanchez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Aatti takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Garturo Aatti has got the better of the ground game so far.
Aatti tries to stand but can't do so whilst Sanchez controls his leg.

Aatti is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Sanchez doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Aatti.
Aatti really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sanchez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Sanchez kicks Aatti off and gets back to his feet.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Sanchez is looking to clinch but Aatti is avoiding it.
Aatti throws a combination. Sanchez tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Aatti goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
No joy there for Aatti, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

and Aatti decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Sanchez's guard.
Sanchez wants to stand up but Aatti is controlling him.
Sanchez is trying to control the position but Aatti postures up.

Garturo Aatti showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Diego Sanchez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Aatti throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Sanchez stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Aatti fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Sanchez checks it well.
Sanchez gets cracked there but stands up to it.

Sanchez is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Aatti throws a series of punches but Sanchez avoids them all with ease.

Sanchez trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

Sanchez has his foot on Aatti's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Aatti works his way back into a safe position though.
Aatti must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Sanchez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Aatti's guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Aatti can do anything to dispel that myth.

Sanchez working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Let's hope that Aatti has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Sanchez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Aatti can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Sanchez throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Aatti escapes and throws Sanchez's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Aatti cracks Sanchez with a big right hand but Sanchez just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Garturo Aatti is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Diego Sanchez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Garturo Aatti comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Aatti has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
