PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mantak Garuda (ranked 870 p4p, 108 weight class) and Murky McTavern (ranked 823 p4p, 105 weight class). Garuda comes to the cage accompanied by Djiin. Murky McTavern will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mantak Garuda!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Murky McTavern!
The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Aleksandr Martynov and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McTavern misses with a left hand
and Garuda counters with a nice body shot.
McTavern jabs Garuda to the body, keeping him at a distance.
A nice inside leg kick there by Garuda. That's going to slow McTavern down.
Crunch! Garuda slams his shin into McTavern's torso.
Garuda throws a lazy uppercut
and McTavern counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
McTavern blocks a head kick by Garuda.
McTavern swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Garuda fails with an attempt to clinch.
McTavern doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Garuda connects with a solid leg kick.
Garuda pivots, looking for a leg kick but McTavern is out of range and Garuda settles back down.
McTavern appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.

and McTavern counters with a stiff right hand.


It looks like Mantak Garuda has been cut.
McTavern throws out a powerful jab.
Garuda connects with an inside leg kick.
McTavern defending well as Garuda loads up on a big left hand.
McTavern looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Garuda dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Garuda lands a really nice looking cross but McTavern seems unphased.
Garuda jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.

Garuda cracks McTavern with a right hand to the side of the head.
McTavern lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Garuda lands a nice leg kick that just misses McTavern's sensitive parts.
Garuda pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
McTavern has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Garuda.
McTavern looks to score with a jab to the body but Garuda is just out of range.
Mantak Garuda seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Garuda throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Garuda takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
McTavern uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Garuda lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
McTavern doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Garuda throws a head kick but McTavern moves out of range.
McTavern misses with a hook
and McTavern takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.


McTavern is rocked!
Garuda throws a low kick but McTavern avoids it.
It seemed like McTavern was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Garuda misses with a straight left.
A countering left hand to the body from McTavern misses.

Sloppy strikes from McTavern. Those never looked like landing.
McTavern lands with an overhand left.
Garuda listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
McTavern bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Garuda scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Garuda throws a half hearted mid kick.
McTavern looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts McTavern, as that shot connected.


Mantak Garuda's cut is getting worse.
Garuda lands with a thumping leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


McTavern on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
A looping hook to the body misses from Garuda. McTavern does a little dance to reset his feet.
McTavern looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Garuda rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and McTavern counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
McTavern misses with a hook. Garuda ducked under it nicely.
Garuda fires out a quick counter leg kick but McTavern just manages to avoid it.

enabling McTavern to counter with a crisp jab.

McTavern's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.

McTavern tries to move into range but Garuda moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
McTavern moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Garuda fakes a jab and throws a low kick but McTavern checks it well.
A nice side step and McTavern releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Mantak Garuda is winning the standup battle so far.
Garuda swings and misses with a hook to the body.
It seemed like McTavern was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
It looks like Garuda has been trying to sharpen up his punching technique, as it looks crisper than last time we saw him.
McTavern uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Garuda has time to react.


Mantak Garuda's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.
McTavern avoids the head kick by Garuda.
McTavern now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Garuda lands with a good body shot.

Garuda rushes McTavern and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

McTavern has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Garuda is trying to keep an underhook but McTavern manages to get the takedown into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

McTavern is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Garuda has managed to free his arm - good work.
Garuda keeping control of the position.
Garuda wants to control but McTavern is keeping busy.

McTavern is trying to control the action in half guard but Garuda is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

McTavern is keen to just control but Garuda is a slippery customer.

Garuda has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. McTavern is working away from the top position though.

McTavern is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Garuda sees it coming and defends easily.

McTavern stands and throws Garuda's legs to the side, diving into side control.
McTavern trying to control the action but Garuda is working from the bottom.

McTavern tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Garuda tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but McTavern wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
McTavern is looking to take a break and control but Garuda is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

McTavern thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Garuda is trying to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Murky McTavern will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The cut man is working on Mantak Garuda's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


McTavern takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
A slapping leg kick lands for Garuda.
Garuda misses with a body shot.
McTavern swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Garuda is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that McTavern can do to turn this around?
McTavern avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Garuda lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

Garuda lands a big head kick that sends McTavern tumbling to the mat! Garuda takes a step backwards and waves McTavern back to his feet - he wants the finish!
McTavern is still on wobbly legs! Can Garuda finish him?
Garuda lands a monster head kick that reverborates around the arena! The crowd goes wild as McTavern crumples to the floor! Garuda milks the crowd's applause and if that isn't knockout of the night, I will be very surprised!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:48 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Mantak Garuda!

Mantak Garuda thanked the fans post fight for their support.
In defeat, Murky McTavern stepped up to the mic, saying 'Take me back to the sea and throw me to the fishes'.
