The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Radbod Blank and Albert Achterberg.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Roach gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Roach not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Roach is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Gaul sitting in guard here, content to control.
Roach pulls Gaul in close to prevent any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Gaul has control of an arm but Roach manages to advance to Gaul's back!

Roach had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Gaul defends it easily.

Roach is working an open guard so Gaul takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Gaul makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Gaul looks to land a body kick but Roach moved away.

Gaul shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Roach manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Roach has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Gaul is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Roach loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Roach accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Gaul wants to stand and escape but Roach is having none of it.

Roach postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Gaul is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Roach, into his guard.

Gaul stops Roach from standing up.

Roach looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Roach has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gaul lands a couple of digs.

A close round but Anak Gaul will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Gaul looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Gaul is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Roach sees it coming and defends easily.
Roach wants to control but Gaul is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Gaul is looking to work some ground and pound but Roach has wrist control.
Anak Gaul has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gaul wants to pass the guard but Roach is keeping the position.
Roach keeping moving, preventing Gaul from controlling successfully.
Roach has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Roach throws his legs up looking for a submission but Gaul uses it to pass to side control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Roach is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Roach is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Gaul off and has taken his back!

Roach has his opponent's back but Gaul is looking to stand. He manages to get to his feet and shakes off Roach.
Roach tries to close the distance and clinch but Gaul swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Gaul bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Gaul is breathing heavily.
Gaul trying to control the position but Roach is working away.
Roach is looking for a sweep.

Gaul stands up.
A head kick misses from Gaul.

Roach gets caught flat footed, as Gaul shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Roach working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gaul doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gaul manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Roach has his feet on Gaul's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Anak Gaul seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Gaul moves in looking to clinch but Roach pushes him off.
Roach attempts a counter takedown but Gaul avoids it well and moves away.
Tristan Roach is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Gaul shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Roach is trying to defend but Gaul finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Gaul is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Roach still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Roach has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

Gaul is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Roach is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Gaul is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Gaul might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Roach haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
