PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Eddie Gelfen (ranked 1153 p4p, 153 weight class) and Aaron Smith (ranked 2123 p4p, 248 weight class). Smith has chosen Lonely Train by Black Stone Cherry as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Eddie Gelfen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Aaron Smith!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Chris Saunders and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A slapping body kick lands there for Gelfen.
Smith has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Smith misses with a looping right.
Gelfen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
The fighters circling - Smith throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Gelfen swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Smith.
Gelfen lands a really nice looking cross but Smith seems unphased.
Gelfen uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Smith.
Gelfen throws a quick counter kick to the body but Smith avoids it.
Gelfen staying out of range there.
Smith throws a body punch but Gelfen moves out of range.
Gelfen swings away with a body shot that misses
and Smith counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Gelfen scores with a sloppy right hand. Smith should have avoided that one.


It looks like Aaron Smith has been cut.
Smith moves out of range as Gelfen strikes.
Gelfen lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Smith looks to throw the jab but Gelfen is out of range.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Gelfen catches Smith napping and connects with a big right hand that sends Smith to the canvas!


Smith is rocked!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gelfen preventing the sweep.
Gelfen is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Gelfen wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Smith looking for a guillotine here but Gelfen defends easily.
Gelfen trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Gelfen tries to stand but Smith is controlling from the bottom.
Gelfen controlling from the top position.

Gelfen decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Smith jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Gelfen lands a jab to the head.
Gelfen moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Smith throws a hook to the side of Gelfen's head but Gelfen sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Gelfen looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gelfen throws a right hand that Smith ducks under and follows up with a left that Smith also avoids with ease.
Gelfen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Eddie Gelfen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gelfen scores with a three punch combo!
Gelfen shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Smith throws a lazy right hand but Gelfen sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Gelfen misses with an uppercut
and Smith counters with a nice uppercut.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Gelfen blocks a jab.
Smith misses with a leg kick.
Smith feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Gelfen's calf.
Nice defenses there by Smith.
Smith throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Gelfen.
Gelfen slips a jab and a cross from Smith.
Smith lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Smith throws a jab when Gelfen was well out of range.
Gelfen fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Smith looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Gelfen lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Gelfen moves in looking to clinch but Smith pushes him off.

Smith moves into the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith prevents the takedown attempt.
A short uppercut from Gelfen.
Smith misses with the head strike.
Gelfen swings wildly with an uppercut but Smith uses good head movement to avoid it.
Gelfen pushes Smith back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Smith lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.

Gelfen breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Gelfen tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Smith looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.

Gelfen drops Smith with a right and a left! Gelfen comes rushing in but Smith regains his composure and manages to keep Gelfen in guard.
Smith is still in real trouble! Can Gelfen finish him?


That has opened up Aaron Smith's cut even more.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Gelfen gets to his feet - Smith follows without any prompting.
Gelfen is looking for an opening here. He's unloaded a big left hand that catches Smith flush on the jaw and sends him tumbling to the canvas! Smith is out cold! Gelfen holds back from landing any unnecessary shots to his unconscious opponent, as the referee reacts slowly to the situation. A brutal knockout and then some excellent sportsmanship - this guy is my new favorite fighter!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Eddie Gelfen!
Eddie Gelfen decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
Aaron Smith spoke after the fight, saying 'No one likes seeing their opponent's hand raised, but that just means that they were the better man today. My team at 3Band MMA and I will break down this match and make the proper changes for my next camp.'.
