PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nathan Myers (ranked 5176 p4p, 0 weight class) and Luis Cruz (ranked 6312 p4p, 0 weight class). Luis Cruz will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Nathan Myers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Luis Cruz!
The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Peter Branson and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Myers shoots in looking for a takedown but Cruz manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Myers's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Cruz fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Myers shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Cruz but Cruz pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Myers is looking to clinch but Cruz is avoiding it.

Cruz gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Myers could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Cruz successfully pulls guard.
Myers's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Cruz wants to sweep here but Myers controlling him for the moment.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Cruz manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cruz manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Myers seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Cruz for as long as he can get away with.

Myers got a little sloppy there for a moment and Cruz has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Myers has managed to get both his arms back between Cruz's legs - danger averted.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Myers is looking to stand up but Cruz won't let him.
Myers throws a big elbow that misses.
Myers controls from within his opponent's guard.
Cruz wants to stand up but Myers is controlling him.
Cruz trying to control the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Myers postures up and lands a big shot to Cruz's brow.

Cruz looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Myers tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Cruz avoids it.

Cruz manages to break the clinch.
Myers circles away from the clinch attempt.

Myers closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Myers wants to control but Cruz is keeping him busy.

Myers looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Cruz with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Myers is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Cruz tries to roll over but Myers keeps him under control.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Myers in particular looking to stall.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Myers has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

This is a sustained period of stalling by Myers.

Cruz had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Myers defends it easily.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Myers is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

That was a close second round but I would say that Nathan Myers will probably get the nod.

Cruz lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Cruz tries to clinch but Myers is having none of it.

Myers bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Myers is looking to take a break and control but Cruz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Cruz tries to buck Myers off but Myers is having none of it.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Cruz lands with a slapping head kick.
Cruz darts in looking for a takedown but Myers gets double underhooks and turns Cruz into the cage.
Cruz takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Myers fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Cruz, pushing him back against the cage.

Cruz breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Myers shoots in looking for a takedown. Cruz tries to sprawl out of it but Myers keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Cruz manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Cruz unleashes a big counter combination but Myers bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Cruz lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Luis Cruz seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Myers shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cruz as he jumps to the side.
Cruz tries to counter with a clinch but Myers shakes him off and moves away.
Cruz scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Cruz scores with a one two! Myers had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Myers rushes Cruz and presses him up against the cage.
Cruz has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Myers after a bit of a struggle.

Myers tries to pull guard but Cruz forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nathan Myers. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Cruz jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Myers walks away with a smile on his face. Cruz gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Myers drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Cruz is looking for a sweep.

Myers is trying to get an arm triangle but Cruz is defending well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Myers grinds an elbow into Cruz's temple.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Luis Cruz.
I think Cruz has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
