PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Welter Weight (ranked 306 p4p, 40 weight class) and Matt Askren (ranked 1121 p4p, 139 weight class). Matt Askren told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Welter Weight!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Matt Askren!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Columbo Gatti and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Askren misses with a hook
and Weight counters with a stiff right hand.
Askren throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Weight's waist but Weight gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Askren off to one side.
Askren slips a jab from Weight.
Askren uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Weight.
We've been told by Weight's head coaches at Men Only. No Liberals ! that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Weight takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Askren fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Askren closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the ropes.

Askren is working on a single leg takedown against the ropes. Weight can't fight it off and eventually Askren manages to take the fight to the floor. Weight looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Askren stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Weight swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Askren distracts Weight with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Askren throws an elbow that misses. Weight uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Askren's guard. Nice move by Weight!

Askren bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Weight's guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Askren accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Askren throws an elbow but Weight slips to the side and avoids it well.

Askren is staying tight to Weight's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Askren's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Askren lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Weight down.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Askren looks for a takedown but Weight sprawls well.
Donk. Askren catches Weight right on the button with a cross.
Weight throws a jab but it's blocked by Askren.
And Askren tries to counter it with a takedown but Weight pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Askren is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Askren has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Askren seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Weight is not content to let Askren control the position.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Askren working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Askren connects with a nice short shot to Weight's temple.

Weight has hold of Askren's hands but Askren slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Askren wants to take a breather but Weight is having none of it.
Askren lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Askren takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Matt Askren showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Welter Weight.
I think Askren has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Matt Askren is the new welterweight champion!
After the fight, Matt Askren was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
