PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Juan Alvarez (ranked 5676 p4p, 0 weight class) and Moses Makwame (ranked 6755 p4p, 426 weight class). Makwame has chosen House of Pain - Jump Around as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Juan Alvarez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Moses Makwame!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alvarez clinches up with Makwame and pushes him back against the cage.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Alvarez seems to have come into the fight with the intention of avoiding any damage in the clinch, rather than actually showing any aggression.
Makwame can't break the clinch.
Makwame wants to break the clinch but can't.
Makwame is struggling to control the position.

The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Alvarez lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Alvarez seems to be working for a kimura but Makwame defends the submission attempt.
Makwame is staying active underneath Alvarez, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Makwame is just holding on here. Alvarez manages to take his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Alvarez has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Makwame has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Makwame is having to fend off submission attempts from Alvarez, who is looking to sink in the choke. Alvarez doesn't have the hooks in though and Makwame manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Alvarez has his foot on Makwame's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Makwame works his way back into a safe position though.
Alvarez on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Alvarez tries to get out of the position.
Alvarez has a closed guard, preventing Makwame from standing up.
Makwame controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Makwame wants to control from the top but Alvarez keeps moving.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Alvarez tries to get to full guard but Makwame has control of the leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Makwame shoots in but no luck this time.

Alvarez shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Makwame can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Alvarez controls the pace.

Alvarez has gone for a leg lock! Makwame slips out almost immediately though and dives into Alvarez's guard.


Makwame gets to his feet - Alvarez follows without any prompting.

Alvarez throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Makwame tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Alvarez is in Makwame's guard.
Makwame wants to stand up but Alvarez is controlling him.

Alvarez not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Alvarez is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Makwame can do to turn this around?

Alvarez has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Makwame working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Alvarez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Alvarez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Alvarez won't allow Makwame to get back to his feet.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Alvarez has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Makwame lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Makwame takes the fight into the clinch.

Alvarez has hold of one of Makwame's legs. Makwame is fighting the takedown attempt but Alvarez gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Makwame wants to stand up but Alvarez is controlling him.

Alvarez has an Americana. Makwame didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Alvarez is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Alvarez hooks up with any of them at the after show party.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Juan Alvarez!
