TWGC 22 (170lbs, D3): Finals - Round 1 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a welterweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Paul Irvin (ranked 2346 p4p, 274 weight class) and Tae Shik Cha (ranked 4147 p4p, 0 weight class). Cha has chosen Emancipator - When I Go as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Paul Irvin looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Sydney, with a TWGC record of 3 wins and 3 losses; Paul Irvin! And in the blue corner, fighting out of London, with a TWGC record of 3 wins and 1 losses; Tae Shik Cha!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Robert Douchet and Trevor Gratis.


The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Cha leaves Irvin with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Cha stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Cha wants it to stay on the feet.
Irvin shoots in looking for a takedown. Cha tries to sprawl out of it but Irvin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Cha manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Paul Irvin. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Irvin shoots in but no luck this time.

Cha gets control of Irvin's arms and successfully pulls guard. Cha will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Cha can do anything to dispel that myth.

Cha takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Cha is riding his opponent, not letting Irvin buck him off.

What can Irvin do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Let's hope that Cha has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
