PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Fletcher Bowen (ranked 24544 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hakuho Sho (ranked 5843 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Fletcher Bowen has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Fletcher Bowen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Hakuho Sho!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sho tries to bum rush Bowen with a series of wild strikes but Bowen uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Bowen could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Sho fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Bowen sprawls well initially but Sho persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Sho is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Sho trying to pass the guard but Bowen defending well.
Bowen on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sho looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Sho stops Bowen from getting back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sho tries to pass the half guard into mount. Bowen knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Bowen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Sho working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Sho has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Sho in particular looking to stall.
It looks like Sho might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Bowen will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Sho gets a takedown into half guard.
Bowen tries to kick Sho off in order to stand up. Sho Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
Bowen is breathing heavily.

Bowen is being controlled here.

Sho is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Bowen has escaped the position, nice work there.
Sho controls the position.
Bowen might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Sho passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Bowen!

Sho looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Sho looking to control and managing it successfully.

It looks like Fletcher Bowen has been cut.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sho controlling the pace for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Sho shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Bowen's guard.
Sho controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Bowen wants to stand and escape but Sho is having none of it.
Sho pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Bowen is keeping the position for now.
Sho is stalling in the full guard.

Sho stands up over Bowen, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Sho is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Sho misses with a double jab
and Bowen counters with a series of strikes. Sho will be more careful next time no doubt.

Bowen gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Sho to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Bowen manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sho jumps guard.
Bowen is fighting to break Sho's control of his arms but Sho is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Sho manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Bowen manages to get himself to full guard.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Sho is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sho is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Sho is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Sho wants to stand but Bowen has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Sho with a nice head shot there.
Hakuho Sho has got the better of the ground game so far.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Sho thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Sho is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Sho slips nicely into half guard.
Sho is taking a breather. Bowen says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hakuho Sho showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Sho feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Bowen has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Sho is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
With the fighters up against the cage, Bowen throws an elbow but misses.
A shot in the inside from Sho.
Sho has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Bowen is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Sho gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Bowen pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Sho stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sho wants it to stay on the feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Sho fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Bowen to the ground. Sho is now in Bowen's guard.


Bowen is rocked!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Sho is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Oh Bowen is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Sho works a leg free and moves into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sho passes to full mount!
Sho lands a big elbow - Bowen is in trouble! More strikes from the mount and Bowen is forced to tap out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:21 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Hakuho Sho!
