PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mac Fowler (ranked 25361 p4p, 515 weight class) and Kazuo Koizumi (ranked 8337 p4p, 480 weight class). Mac Fowler has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mac Fowler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kazuo Koizumi!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, John Roberts and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Fowler enables Koizumi to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Fowler manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Koizumi drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Fowler manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Koizumi has Fowler in his guard.

Koizumi is looking for a triangle here but Fowler uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Koizumi looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Koizumi tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Fowler paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Fowler avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Fowler stuffs the takedown.
Koizumi avoids a punch combination nicely.
Fowler throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Koizumi's waist but Koizumi gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Fowler off to one side.

Koizumi throws the kick towards the body but Fowler avoids it.

and Fowler counters with a single leg into guard. Koizumi didn't expect that.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fowler is breathing heavily.
Fowler slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Fowler is working Koizumi over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Koizumi is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Koizumi is looking for a kimura but Fowler is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Koizumi to get the leverage.

That was a close round but I would say that Mac Fowler will probably get the nod.

Koizumi throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Fowler misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Despite the aggression on Koizumi's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Fowler changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Koizumi fights it off and pushes away nicely.
The fight stays on the outside here - Koizumi looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
We've been told by Fowler's head coaches at Cozad MMA St Petersburg that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Fowler's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Koizumi tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Fowler shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Koizumi but Koizumi pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mac Fowler. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kazuo Koizumi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Koizumi shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Fowler but Fowler pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Fowler looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
A little jabbing left from Koizumi on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Koizumi has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Some bone on bone action there as Fowler checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

Koizumi fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Fowler will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Koizumi closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Koizumi lands in his opponent's guard.

Koizumi has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Fowler clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Fowler tries to roll but Koizumi sticks to his back.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Fowler has his hands over his head blocking the strikes from Koizumi.

Koizumi is persistently looking for the submission but Fowler is defending it well.

Koizumi is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Fowler has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kazuo Koizumi comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Koizumi has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
