PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Devon Clarke (ranked 8017 p4p, 0 weight class) and Basil Brubaker (ranked 5919 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Devon Clarke has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Devon Clarke!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Basil Brubaker!
The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Sandra Marshall and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brubaker leaves Clarke with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Clarke is defended easily by Brubaker.
A nice side step and Brubaker releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

Brubaker gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Clarke tries to pull guard but Brubaker forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Devon Clarke. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Brubaker breaks from the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brubaker throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.

Brubaker lands a few punches from side control.

Brubaker is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Clarke's shoulder. That is not cool.
Brubaker has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Clarke is looking for a sweep.

Brubaker stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Clarke wants to clinch.
Brubaker is looking for the big counter here.
Clarke fails with an attempt to clinch.

Clarke gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Brubaker postures up in Clarke's guard and throws a big left but Clarke blocks it.

It looks like Brubaker might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Brubaker is looking to work some ground and pound but Clarke has wrist control.
Clarke will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brubaker controls from within his opponent's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Brubaker drops back looking for a leg! Clarke is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Clarke manages to kick Brubaker off! Brubaker jumps back into Clarke's guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Clarke tries to keep at a distance but Brubaker has taken the fight into the clinch.

Brubaker manages to break the clinch.
Clarke tries for a takedown but Brubaker circles away easily
and Brubaker counters with a straight right hand.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Clarke gets tackled into the cage by Brubaker. Brubaker maintains the clinch.

Brubaker gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Brubaker drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Brubaker jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Clarke knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Brubaker on the ground.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Brubaker forces his way into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Basil Brubaker dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Brubaker pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Clarke back to the cage. Brubaker follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Brubaker shoots in and gets a takedown into Clarke's guard.
Brubaker seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Clarke really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Brubaker thows a huge punch but Clarke dodges it nicely.
Brubaker looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Clarke pushes Brubaker off looking to stand but Brubaker dives back in and keeps control.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Brubaker is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Brubaker content to control rather than advance.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Clarke fails with a takedown attempt.
Brubaker changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Clarke tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Brubaker defends well and Clarke ends up having to push Brubaker into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Clarke gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Brubaker to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Brubaker advances to half guard.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Brubaker connects with a nice short shot to Clarke's temple.

Brubaker is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Clarke has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Brubaker has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Brubaker quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Brubaker but it's paid off an Clarke is forced to tap! Nice work by Brubaker.
