PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Duncan Chavez (ranked 23690 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ray Fass (ranked 5941 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Duncan Chavez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ray Fass!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Jonathan Paton and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fass swinging wildly here.
Chavez is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Fass.
Fass tries to close the distance and clinch up but Chavez swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Fass shoots in and bounces Chavez off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Chavez really is a fat lump.
Chavez lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Chavez wants to get up but he can't break Fass's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Chavez decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Fass gets a takedown into half guard.

Chavez is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Fass pulls his head out easily.
Fass prevents Chavez from improving his position.
The fighters are battling for position here. Chavez manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Fass slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chavez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Fass is one step ahead there.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Chavez throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Chavez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Fass defends it easily.
Chavez is breathing heavily.
Chavez keeping moving, preventing Fass from controlling successfully.
Fass passes Chavez's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Chavez is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Fass jumps into side control!
Fass tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

Chavez sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Chavez wants to improve his position but Fass is controlling well.
Fass tries to stand and escape but Chavez is controlling the position.
Fass is looking to take a break and control but Chavez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
It looks like Fass is going to stand back up.
Fass is pressing down on Chavez's thigh, looking to free his foot. Chavez is holding on for now.
Chavez is trying to get back to full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Chavez has a hand on Fass's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Fass takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Chavez is looking to improve his position but Fass isn't that keen on the idea.

Fass is working for a guillotine from mount but Chavez frees his head quite easily.
Fass looking to control and managing it successfully.
It looks like Fass might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Fass's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Chavez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Chavez sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ray Fass dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Chavez moves out of range of the body kick from Fass.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Chavez enables Fass to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Chavez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fass trying to control but Chavez is working from the bottom.
Chavez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Fass has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Chavez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Fass gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Fass wants to control from the top but Chavez keeps moving.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Fass is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Fass wants to stand but Chavez is controlling his posture from full guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Fass moves into range and lands a nice body kick.

Fass clinches with his opponent.

Fass has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Chavez regains guard immediately.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Chavez looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Fass puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Chavez wants to control the action here but instead Fass manages to pass to full mount!
Chavez tries to lock up and control but Fass gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Chavez is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Fass fails to move to back control.
Chavez is desperately trying to improve his position but Fass has a good base and remains in mount.

Fass is working to isolate an arm here. It's a telegraphed submission attempt but he's gone for it anyway - and he's got it! Fass extends the arm and Chavez is forced to tap!
