PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Paul Hunt (ranked 530 p4p, 80 weight class) and Angelo Mendez (ranked 829 p4p, 114 weight class). Mendez comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Angelito kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Angelo Mendez has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Paul Hunt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Angelo Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Ben Zyskovitsi and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendez checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
A punch combination from Mendez misses.
Hunt punishes Mendez's body with a nice straight punch.
Mendez looks to land a combination but Hunt avoids it well.
Hunt fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Mendez looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Hunt drives through with a takedown into guard.
Mendez is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Hunt is controlling him.
Mendez looking to control.
Mendez looking for a sweep. Not yet Mendez, not yet.
Mendez keeping moving, preventing Hunt from controlling successfully.
Hunt stands and throws Mendez's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Hunt staying calm.
Hunt is putting a hurting on Mendez here, landing some big shots from side control.
Mendez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hunt. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Hunt advances to full mount.
You get the feeling that Mendez really doesn't like being in this position too much.

Hunt has control of Mendez's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Mendez regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Hunt has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Mendez's face.
Mendez can't escape the position.
A nice elbow there by Hunt.
Mendez wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Mendez is trying to stand back up.
Mendez is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Hunt off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.
Hunt wants to control but Mendez is keeping busy.

Hunt is riding his opponent, not letting Mendez buck him off.
Mendez wants to escape the position.
Hunt is looking to finish with some ground and pound!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hunt lands a punch to the side of the head from the back.
I would not like to be Mendez right now.
Hunt trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
Hunt lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Hunt.

Mendez is trying to get back to his feet but Hunt has full control of the position and if anything, Mendez has just worked his way into a worse spot.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Hunt is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Mendez is defending well though. Hunt let's go of the attempt for now.

Mendez manages to stand up with Hunt still on his back. Eventually Hunt drops to his feet and we're back in the standing position.
Mendez takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Mendez throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
enabling Hunt to counter with a crisp jab.
Hunt doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Mendez counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Hunt will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Mendez misses with a looping left.
Mendez needs to keep his hands up - Hunt had a free shot at his head there.
Angelo Mendez is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Mendez on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Angelo Mendez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Mendez throws a lazy right hand but Hunt sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Hunt slips under a jab from Mendez.

Hunt throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Mendez tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Hunt is in Mendez's guard.
Hunt trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Hunt makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Hunt throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mendez works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Hunt drops back looking for a leg! Mendez is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Mendez manages to kick Hunt off! Hunt jumps back into Mendez's guard.
Hunt engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Hunt throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mendez works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Hunt dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Hunt lands a front kick.
Mendez missing with a left hand there. Hunt was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Mendez defending well as Hunt loads up on a big left hand.
Hunt dips to his left and cracks Mendez with an uppercut!
Mendez throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Mendez's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Mendez duly obliges.

Hunt fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mendez, pushing him back against the cage.
Hunt misses with a punch to the body.
Hunt lands a hook that snaps the head of Mendez backwards.
A frustrated look appears on Mendez's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Hunt lands a right hand.
Hunt makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Mendez blocks a body shot from Hunt.
Hunt goes for a takedown in the clinch but Mendez prevents it.
Hunt misses with a punch on the inside.
Hunt is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Mendez can do to turn this around?
Hunt lands a hook that snaps the head of Mendez backwards.

That's one minute gone in the round.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Hunt.

Hunt pulls Mendez into guard.
Mendez controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Mendez has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Hunt to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Mendez is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Hunt pulls down on the head and he's put Mendez to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:29 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Paul Hunt!
Paul Hunt really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Red Light Coffeeshop logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
