The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Smith tries to score a body lock takedown but Rodriguez shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

A body shot lands from Rodriguez.
Rodriguez could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Rodriguez misses with a punch to the body.
Rodriguez misses with a hook to the ribs.
Smith managing to block the knees to the body from Rodriguez.

Smith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rodriguez shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Rodriguez throws a wild body kick that Smith sees coming a mile off.
Smith drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Rodriguez defends it well.
Sloppy strikes from Smith. Those never looked like landing.
Smith looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Rodriguez stuffs the takedown attempt from Smith. Smith gets slowly back to his feet.
Carlos Rodriguez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Fireball Smith.
Smith throws the kick towards the body but Rodriguez avoids it.

Smith gets tackled into the cage by Rodriguez. Rodriguez maintains the clinch.
Rodriguez tries to land knees in the clinch but Smith avoids the damage to the body.

Smith pulls guard.

Smith has his feet on Rodriguez's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

and Smith counters with a two punch combo.
Smith shoots in but no luck this time.
Smith swats away the attempt to clinch by Rodriguez.
Rodriguez lands with a nice body kick.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Both fighters circling a little - Rodriguez finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Smith looks winded!

Smith avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rodriguez swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Rodriguez swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Smith pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Rodriguez goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Smith avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Rodriguez rushes Smith and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Rodriguez misses with a knee strike.
Rodriguez lands a hook that snaps the head of Smith backwards.

Rodriguez breaks from the clinch.

Rodriguez tries a head kick but it misses.
Rodriguez swings and misses with a hook to the body.
A head kick misses from Smith.
Rodriguez looks for the body kick but Smith saw that one coming.
Rodriguez throws a body punch but Smith moves out of range.
Ohhhhh! A huge head kick from Rodriguez! Smith is out on his feet! Rodriguez rushes in and throws more strikes. The ref is looking closely - Smith is covering up but the punishment is just too much and the ref steps in to stop the fight! Smith is staring into space, just thankful that the beatdown has ended. Brutal finish.
