TWGC 11 (155lbs, D4): Sydney Qualifier - Round 2 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a lightweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between George Kalai and William Dewey. William Dewey told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Sydney, with a TWGC record of 1 wins and 0 losses; George Kalai! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Tokyo, with a TWGC record of 1 wins and 1 losses; William Dewey!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Darius Henderson and Summer Carpenter.


The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.

Dewey closes the distance and pushes Kalai back into the cage.
Kalai goes for a takedown attempt but Dewey pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Dewey has managed to clinch.
Kalai is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Dewey is defending well.
Kalai is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for George Kalai. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Dewey has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Kalai avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Kalai is defending well against a takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Dewey is pressed up against the cage. Kalai has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Dewey down to the mat. Dewey avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Dewey moves into the clinch.
Dewey is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Kalai gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Dewey gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Kalai.

Dewey has Kalai pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Dewey pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Kalai tumbling to the mat - Dewey dives into Kalai's guard.

Kalai tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Dewey tries to free his leg and advance position but Kalai is retaining full guard.
Dewey seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Kalai is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Kalai is trying to control the action in half guard but Dewey is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Dewey is trying to maintain the position but Kalai is very close to passing his half guard.
Kalai tries to pass the half guard into mount. Dewey knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Dewey slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Dewey bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kalai's guard.

Dewey stays in close to Kalai's body and controls the position.
Let's hope that Dewey has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Kalai not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Dewey sitting in guard here, content to control.
Kalai is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Dewey controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Kalai will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Kalai looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Kalai is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Dewey has his hands clasped together but Kalai extends and breaks Dewey's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Kalai.
