PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Goku Son (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Patrick Gresam (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Patrick Gresam was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Goku Son!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Patrick Gresam!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Peter Branson and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice sprawl there from Son as Gresam shoots in.
Gresam misses with a takedown attempt

and Son counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Son prevents the takedown attempt.
Goku Son has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Patrick Gresam.
Son wants a takedown.
Gresam fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Son tries to score a body lock takedown but Gresam shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Gresam wants a takedown but no success here.
Gresam prevents the takedown attempt.
Son has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Gresam is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Gresam is trying to pull guard but Son has him pressed against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Son is trying to drag Gresam to the mat but Gresam just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Gresam is pressed up against the cage. Son has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Gresam down to the mat. Gresam avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Gresam tries a head kick but it misses.
Gresam tries to clinch but Son moves out of range.
Gresam fails with the takedown.
As Gresam looks to move away, Son throws a big counter combo but Gresam just gets out of the way.

Son moves into the clinch successfully.
Son drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gresam goes for a takedown in the clinch but Son prevents it.

Gresam tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Gresam can't get the takedown.
Gresam tries to pull guard but Son holds him up against the cage and eventually Gresam drops back down to his feet.

Son gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Gresam regains guard.
Gresam has his hands on Son's head, controlling the position.
Son trying to control but Gresam is working from the bottom.

Son is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Gresam tries to strike from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Son postures up.
Son distracts Gresam with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Son pushing down on Gresam's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Son tries to pass to full mount but Gresam defends it.
Son is thwarting Gresam's attempts to control the position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Gresam is not content to let Son control the position.
Gresam throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Gresam looks like he's trying to stand up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Son shoots in for a takedown but Gresam shows good takedown defense.
Gresam throws a push kick but Son slaps the foot to one side.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Gresam is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Son is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Goku Son dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Son shoots in for a takedown but Gresam shows good takedown defense.
Gresam was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind.

Gresam looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Son kicks off Gresam and gets to his feet.

Gresam gets a double leg takedown into Son's guard.
Gresam trying to control but Son is working from the bottom.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Gresam not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Son wants to control but Gresam passes easily into half guard.
Goku Son overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Son gets back to full guard.
Gresam being controlled here momentarily.
Gresam postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Gresam wants to control from the top but Son keeps moving.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Son is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Gresam can do to turn this around?

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Gresam shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Son as he jumps to the side.
Gresam listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Gresam shoots in looking for a takedown. Son tries to sprawl out of it but Gresam keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Son manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
As Gresam looks to move away, Son throws a big counter combo but Gresam just gets out of the way.

Son looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Gresam is fending him off so far but Son persists. Nope, Gresam circles away and we're back to standing.
Gresam dives in for a single leg takedown but Son sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Goku Son has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Patrick Gresam.
Gresam shoots in looking for a takedown but Son manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Gresam's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Gresam is breathing heavily.

Son has managed to clinch.
Gresam misses with an elbow over the top.
Gresam is trying to maintain a safe position but Son gets an underhook and turns Gresam into the cage.
Gresam misses with a short punch on the inside.
Son has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Gresam avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Son is working for takedown but Gresam is calmly controlling the position for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Son keeps control of Gresam as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Son is pressed up against the cage. Gresam has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Son down to the mat. Son avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
No luck for Gresam with that takedown attempt.
Son misses with a head kick.
Son avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Son.
Son blocks a head kick by Gresam.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Gresam bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Son bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Goku Son will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Son is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Gresam can't fight it off and eventually Son manages to take the fight to the floor. Gresam looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Son shoots in but Gresam avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Son rushes Gresam and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Son lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Gresam tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Son manages to move to mount!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gresam is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Gresam can't escape the position.
Son misses with a head shot.
Son tries to control but Gresam wriggling away.

Son avoids the attempt from Gresam to control.

Gresam tries to control Son's head but Son pushes him back down and moves quickly to lock up an arm here - he's swung around for an armbar! Will he get it??? Yes! Gresam is tapping out! Lovely Jiu Jitsu there!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:36 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (armbar). Goku Son!
Patrick Gresam was interviewed post fight and said 'We will get this next one! Long live the king!'.
