PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jack Conrad (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rafael Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Conrad comes to the cage accompanied by Rider Part II. Cortez is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Wake Me Up. Jack Conrad has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 18 - 2, fighting out of Montreal, Jack Conrad!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rafael Cortez!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Dillan Fox and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Conrad throws a big shot that misses.
Conrad misses with a leg kick.
Conrad moves into range and connects with a jab.


It looks like Rafael Cortez has been cut.
Cortez rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Conrad moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Conrad tests Cortez's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Conrad looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Conrad pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Horrible takedown attempt by Cortez or perhaps it was just good defense by Conrad, which made it look bad.
Cortez darts in and out, connecting with a jab.


It looks like Jack Conrad has been cut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cortez looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Conrad sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Cortez's guard.
Cortez felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Cortez has his hands clasped together around Conrad's back. He's all about the action.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Conrad lands a few punches from side control.

Conrad is chipping away with strikes.
Conrad tries to advance to mount but can't.
Conrad throws a strike aimed at the side of Cortez's head but Cortez avoids it well.
Cortez is not content to let Conrad control the position.
Cortez manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Conrad thows a huge punch but Cortez dodges it nicely.
Cortez looks like he's trying to stand up.

The fighters are battling for position here. Cortez manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Cortez working for a triangle but Conrad defends it easily.

Cortez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Conrad gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Cortez wants to get back to his feet but Conrad is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Conrad is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Conrad wants to control from the top but Cortez keeps moving.
Cortez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Conrad is looking to work some ground and pound but Cortez has wrist control.
Cortez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Conrad wants to control from the top but Cortez keeps moving.
Cortez has momentary wrist control but Conrad slips an elbow through the middle.
Conrad working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Cortez's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's time! Conrad's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Conrad tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Cortez was well out of range. Poor timing from Conrad.
Cortez throws a nice looking combination but Conrad bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Conrad paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
A big right from Cortez misses.
Conrad throws a jab but it's blocked by Cortez.
Despite the aggression on Cortez's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Conrad chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Cortez can pounce on him.
Conrad will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Conrad, right into the meat.
Conrad throws a low kick but Cortez moves out of range easily.
Conrad throws a front kick aimed at Cortez's knee but Cortez avoids it well.
A bone on bone clash there as Cortez blocks the leg kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Conrad lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Cortez has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Cortez and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Conrad staying out of range there.
Conrad takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Conrad turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Cortez swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Conrad throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Cortez lands a jab to the nose.
Cortez takes a swing at Conrad's ribcage but misses.
Cortez keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Conrad.
Cortez is looking for the big counter here.
Conrad goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Cortez throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Conrad is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Cortez can do to turn this around?

Conrad has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Conrad lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Cortez has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Conrad makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Cortez is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Conrad is controlling him.

Conrad avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Conrad will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Cortez feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Conrad stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Conrad wants it to stay on the feet.
Cortez closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

Cortez lunges at Conrad with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Conrad's hand.
