PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lucky Day (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Felipe Gonzalez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gonzalez has chosen Inside the Fire as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Lucky Day!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Gonzalez!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gonzalez walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Day checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Day misses with a wild combination.
Day scores with a decent looking hook.
Day throws an overhand right that lands on Gonzalez's shoulder, as Gonzalez tries to avoid the shot.
Day tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Gonzalez defends well and Day ends up having to push Gonzalez into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Gonzalez fails in his attempt to clinch.
Gonzalez cracks a nice hook into Day's ribs.
Day's corner calls for a 1-2. Day obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice uppercut lands for Day. That snapped Gonzalez's head back.

It looks like Day has been trying to sharpen up his punching technique, as it looks crisper than last time we saw him.

Day throws a lazy right hand but Gonzalez sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Gonzalez throws a shot to the body.
Gonzalez displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Day.

Gonzalez is looking to slow Day down with leg kicks.
Day tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Gonzalez swivels and escapes.

Lucky Day seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gonzalez throws out a loose jab but Day uses good head movement to avoid it.
Day blocks the body kick.
Gonzalez defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Day.
Gonzalez misses with a looping right.
Day shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gonzalez pinned against the cage. Gonzalez gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Gonzalez tries to close the distance and clinch up but Day swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Gonzalez looks to land a left hand but Day moved out of range nicely.

Gonzalez throws a sloppy head kick and Day moves out of range easily.
Gonzalez throws a predictable looking body shot
enabling Day to counter with a crisp jab.
Day lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Gonzalez instigates a clinch.
Gonzalez presses Day against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
Gonzalez swings wildly with an uppercut but Day uses good head movement to avoid it.
Day is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Day is looking for a takedown.
Gonzalez landing some nice looking knees to the body.
Day tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Day is trying to drag Gonzalez to the mat but Gonzalez just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Gonzalez tries to work over Day's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Felipe Gonzalez will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Day shoots in but Gonzalez avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Day takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

A looping hook to the body misses from Gonzalez. Day does a little dance to reset his feet.

Gonzalez has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Day finds it's way round the side to connect with Gonzalez's head.

Gonzalez gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Day to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Gonzalez manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Day manages to get himself to full guard.


Day has his foot on Gonzalez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gonzalez works his way back into a safe position though.

Day is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Gonzalez is aware though and is defending well.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Day looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gonzalez is one step ahead there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gonzalez in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Day looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Gonzalez passes into half guard.

Day tries to improve position but can't.

Gonzalez wants to control but Day is keeping him busy.

Gonzalez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Day. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Gonzalez tries to score with some ground and pound. Day controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Day tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Day struggling a bit here.
Gonzalez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Day keeps working.
A control attempt from Day but he's now mounted!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Day keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Gonzalez trying to control but Day is having none of it.
Day sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Day wants to get back to full guard.
Day is trying to control but can't.
Gonzalez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Day does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Day is working on a guillotine. He's managed to get to full guard and he's really squeezing tight! Gonzalez is tapping! Great win for Day!
