PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Aqeel Haji (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rodrigo Rojas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rojas has chosen Apaga Mas Não Bate as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Aqeel Haji!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rodrigo Rojas!
The judges for this bout are Sandra Marshall, Santiago Holmes and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Haji throws a nice looking combination but Rojas bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Rojas shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Haji napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Haji tries to improve position but can't.
Rojas throwing strikes but missing, from side control.
Rojas misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Haji sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Haji makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Haji.
Haji controls Rojas momentarily but Rojas frees himself.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rojas trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Haji keeping moving, preventing Rojas from controlling successfully.
Haji avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Rojas missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Haji utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Haji is pulling down on Rojas's head. It's preventing any offense from Rojas, at least for the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Rojas crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Haji - the referee stops the clock and Rojas gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Haji. Rojas manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
No luck for Haji with that takedown attempt.

Rojas stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rojas wants it to stay on the feet.

Rojas has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Rojas buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Haji tries a head kick but it misses.
Haji is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Rojas appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Haji takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.

Haji is trying to control the position but Rojas postures up.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Haji is trying hard to land a takedown here. Rojas sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Haji misses with a low kick as Rojas jumps back.
Rojas swats away the attempt to clinch by Haji.

Rojas clinches up with Haji and pushes him back against the cage.

Rojas manages to pull guard.

Rojas escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Haji gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Rojas is looking for a triangle but Haji pushes his legs off easily.

Haji got a little sloppy there for a moment and Rojas has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Haji has managed to get both his arms back between Rojas's legs - danger averted.

Rojas has his foot on Haji's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Haji works his way back into a safe position though.

Rojas working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Haji doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Rojas is tightening it up a little... Haji has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Haji reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Haji taps out! Nice BJJ there by Rojas!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Rodrigo Rojas!
