PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jack Groper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Takeshi Tono (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jack Groper!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Takeshi Tono!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Colin Fray and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Tono, as that shot connected.
Tono scores with a shot to the body.
Groper shoots for a takedown but Tono saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Tono lands a head shot.
Tono misses with a body kick.
Tono scores with a leg kick.
Tono scores with the left hand. Groper knows he should have avoided that one.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A solid leg kick lands there for Tono.
Groper shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Tono counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Groper tries to move into range but Tono moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
A solid leg kick lands there for Tono.
A head kick from Tono lands but Groper takes it in his stride.
Tono connects with a single shot there.
Tono lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Tono lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Groper misses with a takedown
and Tono cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jack Groper. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Groper shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Tono counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Tono is looking to work some ground and pound but Groper has wrist control.

Groper has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Tono can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Groper working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Tono doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Tono manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Tono chips away with some ground and pound.
Tono trying to control the position from guard on top but Groper is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Groper has control of Tono's left arm, preventing Tono from doing any damage.
Tono trying to control but Groper is working from the bottom.

Groper has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Tono can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Groper definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Tono loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Tono working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Groper lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Groper drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Tono manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Groper has Tono in his guard.


Groper working for submissions but it's allowed Tono to get to half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Groper manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Groper is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Tono wants to control from the top but Groper keeps moving.
Tono landing some decent shots from guard.
Groper is trying to control the position but Tono postures up.

Groper is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Tono really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Groper. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Groper is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Tono defends well.

Groper is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Takeshi Tono dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Tono plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Tono fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Tono throws a head kick that misses.
Groper tries to counter with a takedown but Tono is quick to defend against it.
Groper doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Tono counters with a shoot takedown. Groper fights it but they end up in guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Groper is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Tono is aware though and is defending well.
Tono distracts Groper with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Tono trying to control the position from guard on top but Groper is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Groper avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Groper pushes a forearm under Tono's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Tono is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:31 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Jack Groper!
