Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between James Chaney (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Colton Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 17 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Chaney!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Colton Smith!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Tiny Johnson and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith darts in and clinches Chaney up against the cage.

Smith manages to pull guard.

Smith is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Chaney defends well.
Chaney really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Chaney trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Smith is pulling down on Chaney's head. It's preventing any offense from Chaney, at least for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Chaney is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Smith.
Smith is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Chaney asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Chaney tries to score with some ground and pound. Smith controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Smith is looking for a sweep.

Chaney is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Smith is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Chaney is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Chaney tries to stand but Smith is controlling his head.
Smith is not content to let Chaney control the position.
Chaney tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

The ground and pound from Chaney seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Smith is trying to control Chaney's posture but Chaney avoids it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Chaney tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Smith swivels and escapes.
Chaney misses with a takedown attempt - Smith sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Smith closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith controlling the position.
Chaney sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Chaney. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Chaney wants to control but Smith is keeping busy.
Chaney is trying to stand up here but Smith is controlling him well.
Smith prevents Chaney from improving his position.
Smith throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Smith closes the distance and clinches.
Smith lands a knee to the head.

Smith breaks from the clinch.
Chaney shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Smith darts in looking for a takedown but Chaney gets double underhooks and turns Smith into the cage.

Smith feints and as Chaney raises his hands in defense, Smith changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Smith looking to sit in guard and control but Chaney gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Smith looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Chaney is fighting to break Smith's control of his arms but Smith is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Chaney wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Smith avoids the head kick by Chaney.
Chaney shoots in and drives through. Smith sprawls well.
It seemed like Smith was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Chaney gets tackled into the cage by Smith. Smith maintains the clinch.
Chaney is trying to pull guard but Smith turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Chaney. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Smith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Smith shoots for a double leg takedown but Chaney sprawls well. He's pushed Smith's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Chaney tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Smith defends well and Chaney ends up having to push Smith into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Chaney throws a head kick but Smith moves out of range.
Smith has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Smith receives a warning from the referee for stalling.
Chaney has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Smith after a bit of a struggle.
Chaney is trying to force a seperation but Smith has the dominant position.
Chaney tries to pull guard but Smith holds him up against the cage and eventually Chaney drops back down to his feet.

Smith manages to break the clinch.
Smith leaves Chaney with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Chaney misses with a few strikes there.

and Smith counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Smith has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Chaney clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Smith lands a shot to the body.

Colton Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



Chaney tries to keep at a distance but Smith has taken the fight into the clinch.
Chaney looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Smith keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Chaney's efforts to push away.
Smith controlling the action here for a moment.
Chaney is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Smith pulls him back up using the underhooks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Chaney is on top in guard.

Smith wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Smith is looking to control Chaney's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Smith avoid being mounted?
Chaney stops Smith from getting back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smith can do anything to dispel that myth.
Chaney thows a huge punch but Smith dodges it nicely.
Smith wants to get back to full guard.

Chaney is trying to work for a kimura but Smith is defending well.
Chaney is pressing down on Smith's thigh, looking to free his foot. Smith is holding on for now.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Smith has taken the fight to the clinch.

Smith lands a couple of elbows.
Chaney bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smith's guard.

Chaney is pushing down on Smith's leg trying to pass to half guard. Smith is fighting to maintain full guard but Chaney has managed to sneak the leg through.
Chaney is looking to advance position but Smith won't allow it.
Smith is looking to escape.
Chaney is trying to control the action in half guard but Smith is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smith wants to improve his position but Chaney is controlling well.
James Chaney has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Colton Smith is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Chaney looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

James Chaney showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Smith has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
