PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Johny Burns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lars Opferstock (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Burns might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to "Firestarter" by The Prodigy. Lars Opferstock is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Johny Burns!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lars Opferstock!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Opferstock looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Burns gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Opferstock stops a takedown attempt from Burns.
Burns prevents a takedown attempt there.
Burns wants a takedown.
Opferstock taking a breather.
Opferstock tries for a takedown but Burns manages to get underhooks.

Opferstock has picked Burns up - he's going for a ride! Opferstock dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Burns is pressing down on Opferstock's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Burns trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Opferstock drops back, looking for a kneebar! Burns looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Burns looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Burns!

Opferstock is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Burns working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Burns in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Burns throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Burns looks up at the clock and then as Opferstock takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Burns smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Burns sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Opferstock defending well though.
Burns is thwarting Opferstock's attempts to control the position.
Burns working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Opferstock slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Burns keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Opferstock's head.

Burns scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Burns wants to work for an arm triangle but Opferstock is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Opferstock moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Opferstock lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Burns!

Opferstock looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Opferstock throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Opferstock seems to be working for a kimura but Burns defends the submission attempt.

Opferstock looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Burns wants to improve his position but Opferstock is controlling well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Opferstock wants to pass the guard but Burns is defending well.
Burns lands a couple of sideways elbows.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Johny Burns will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Opferstock rushes Burns and presses him up against the cage.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Opferstock has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Burns avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Opferstock's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Burns drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Burns throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Opferstocks head.

Burns is pressed up against the cage. Opferstock has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Burns down to the mat. Burns avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Opferstock swats away the attempt to clinch by Burns.
Burns throws a wild body kick that Opferstock sees coming a mile off.

Burns striking from the bottom but nothing landed.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Burns throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.

and Burns counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Burns tries to land a front kick but Opferstock steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

and Burns finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Opferstock is breathing heavily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Opferstock moves out of range as Burns strikes.
Burns scores with a kick to the body.
Burns walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Opferstock checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Opferstock crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Burns - the referee stops the clock and Opferstock gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Burns. Opferstock manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Good work by Opferstock as he checks the leg kick.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Johny Burns overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Opferstock has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Burns can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Opferstock tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Opferstock has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Burns holds on, trying desperately to control.
Opferstock misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Opferstock wants to lay and pray for a moment but Burns keeps working.

Johny Burns showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Burns has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
