PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Quinton Burgess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Eli Wentz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wentz is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: For Whom The Bell Tolls. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Quinton Burgess!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Eli Wentz!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Igor Prikhodko and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fighters circle momentarily. Burgess darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Wentz tries to close the distance and clinch but Burgess swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Wentz closes the distance and clinches.

Burgess is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Wentz can't fight it off and eventually Burgess manages to take the fight to the floor. Wentz looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Wentz is working an open guard so Burgess takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Wentz drives through and clinches with Burgess against the cage.
Wentz scores with a nice hook to the head.
Wentz gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Burgess.
Wentz tries to break the clinch but Burgess is controlling the position.

Burgess jumps guard and drags Wentz to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Burgess looking to hit a scissor sweep but Wentz is one step ahead there.
Wentz wants to control from the top but Burgess keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Burgess preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Wentz would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Wentz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Burgess swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Wentz is looking to pass into half guard but Burgess pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Burgess is in guard.


Burgess thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Wentz can do anything to dispel that myth.
Wentz is looking to stand up but Burgess isn't so interested in that idea.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Wentz is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Burgess dives into side control.

Burgess wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Wentz, who protects the arm well.
Burgess has control of an arm but Wentz manages to advance to Burgess's back!
Wentz throwing lazy shots from the back mount that aren't doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
A lull in the action here.
Wentz misses with an elbow to the head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wentz is throwing strikes but Burgess counters by rolling into a better position. After a scramble, Burgess regains half guard.
Wentz trying to control from Burgess's half guard. Burgess has other ideas though and has regained full guard.

Wentz wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Burgess's closed guard. He's half up but Burgess has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Burgess pivots and extends the arm, Wentz falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Burgess! Well done that man!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:53 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Quinton Burgess!
In defeat, Eli Wentz stepped up to the mic, saying 'I am of course very disappointed this happened but I will come back better and stronger and I won't disappoint you again.'.
